Congratulations to Josine and Sal who were married on September 29, 2018. They chose to give to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto in lieu of traditional wedding favours and provided their guests with forget-me-not flower seed packets because of their personal connections to Alzheimer’s disease.
Both Josine and Sal’s grandmothers lived with Alzheimer’s disease and so they saw first-hand the strain that it put, not only on the person but their families as well. Including the Alzheimer Society of Toronto on their wedding day was something they both felt very strongly about doing.
When talking about why they wanted to forego traditional wedding favours, Sal says, “It gave us an opportunity to take an old wedding tradition of providing favours but put a spin on that tradition by supporting a worthwhile cause at the same time.”
Thank you, Josine and Sal, for sharing your special day with us, supporting the Alzheimer Society of Toronto and increasing awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.
Interested in supporting the Society in a similar way to Josine and Sal? Find out how by contacting Holly Groeneveld by email at hgroeneveld@alz.to and find out how you can get involved!

Cheryl put it best: A lot of times when people visit people with Alzheimer’s, they don’t know what to do, they don’t know what to say, they don’t know what to bring for them. The Music Project gives them something to do and something they can enjoy together.

People with dementia are vulnerable to those who would take advantage of them for their money--here's some advice for family caregivers on how to avoid that: https://www.forbes.com/…/aging-parents-with-dementia-bewa…/…
Happy to share with you all a few excerpts from Bonnie's memoir. Bonnie is a client of ours and wrote about her perspective of Alzheimer's disease. It's a rare first person account and interesting in many ways.
“This is a difficult piece to write, and I’ll try not to cry. Please forgive me if I have to blow my nose, as it just keeps running!
I’m now 77. Last year, I noticed that although I could remember childhood events -- even when I was only a year old -- I often couldn’t remember something that happened yesterday. About this time of year at the Farmers Market, the parking spaces were full, and after my medical checkup, I couldn’t find my car. My usual parking space was full, and I couldn’t remember where I’d put the car. I phoned Brian P., my husband, who helped me find it, a few blocks away. I noticed that I could remember much of my past life, including addresses of virtually every home I‘d lived inBrian became concerned, began consulting doctors, and I wound up with a diagnosis of early Alzheimer’s, one of the four forms of dementia. I hate that word, dementia, as it always reminds me of some crazy old lady with an axe, in a weird movie.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Carol Walters, CEO of Alzheimer Society London, ON and Middlesex, and wonderful Scott Russell, CEO of Alzheimer Society Toronto. I wish that my dear mother could have been alive to see what was happening there –the huge group of persons coping with AZ, medical information, and the families who look after them..
"I cried a lot when I received this diagnosis, and then decided to fight this terrible genetic disease. Hey, Dad was a famous professor and a champion boxer as well, and I’m a fighter, too!."
In today's edition of Throwback Thursday we share this touching song by Chris Mann, NBC's television singing contestant on The Voice in 2012.The song was created to spread awareness for Alzheimer's disease and provide further support for caregivers.
