The best viewing season is from January to March. Every year, more than 100 of scarlet macaws will fly from Chiquibul National Park and gather here feeding. Early morning and late afternoon are the best viewing time. For guided tour, please call Mr. Celso at 652-7317. The nearby Mennonite village of Roseville is also a beautiful and tranquil place to visit and walk around after the birding. You need to wade or take the "zip line" to cross the river, which is a fun ride!

I have been wanting to see the Scarlet Macaws at Red Bank for a few years but have never been around South Stann Creek area at the right time of year. This year was different as I visited in February but could not find an organised tour. I managed to get a lift into Red Bank village and asked about the Macaws at a local shop. I was directed to the home of a local guide Mr Celso Sho. On finding the house I was greeted by Celso and invited in for coffee whilst he explained about their conservation and where we could go and see the Macaws. We then set off on foot (as I was unable to ride the offered bicycle). Luckily another couple lookin for the macaws spotted us and asked to join the trip so we used their vehicle for the 1.5 mile journey from the village to the start of the climb to the viewing post. This was a steep climb through the forest taking about 30 minutes to reach the top of a ridge. There are two areas one on either side where the trees have been cleared to alolow views across the valleys. As soon as we arrive we could hear the Macaws calling and soon they started to fly past in pairs. The Macaws at this time were in a large flock of around 60 across the valley feeding on the fruit of the Pole Trees although many more kept flying closer. I spent a couple of hours watching the birds before we descended slowly back to the vehicle. It was a privalage to visit Red Bank to see the Macaws and I can recommend Celso as a guide Tel 652-7317
