Great place to visit for those who love nature.
What an amazing adventure, if you get Jan (apologize if I misspelled the name) he has amazing stories about jungle wildlife and hummingbirds, butterflies, you name it!
We were told by our resort that the Butterfly Ranch was open to stop in guests until the last tour at 3:30. After walking in very high temperatures thinking that we would get a rest at the ranch and have a chance to buy water, we were rudely turned away by the woman who is one of the owners of the ranch. Although our resort told us that they have always had "walk-ins", the owner told us they had another tour group and could not accommodate us. The other tour had just begun and we were surprised that we could not join the group. To add insult to injury, the rude woman yelled at us as we tried to take a picture of baby ducklings from a respectable distance. It seems that the ranch has very interesting things to offer, but that the hostess is not so hospitable. Neither she nor her staff even offered us a chance to purchase water before we were chased away. I ended up with a heat rash and my travel partner and I both felt as if we were very close to heat stroke by the time we made it back to our resort.
Overall, if you must see the butterfly ranch, I would make sure that you have an appointment and a back-up plan. Nevertheless, I would really recommend spending your money at another local venue that appreciates and desires your business.
Came for the butterflies, stayed for the humming birds. Jan & his wife have been raising butterflies here for two decades on this farm south of San Ignacio & have it systematized to high degree. We were shown container after container of each stage of development, all with just the specific plant leaves required by the particular species. Once they make the chrysalis, they are collected in a cabinet in the butterfly tent where they mature & soon emerge as their row is moved forward to the front of the cabinet. They join thousands of others flying around, eating from sugar water feeding stations & circulating about seeking their particular plant & mating to begin the cycle anew.
The road from San Ignacio is unimproved, quite rocky & muddy after a rain so taking it slowly is very necessary. Making more than 30 km/hour is impossible without so much jarring & bumping that one could crack a tooth if not careful.
Once you've seen the butterfly exhibit, stay to watch dozens of humming birds flock around the two sugar water feeders next to the caterpillar management hut. All in all, well worth the uncomfortable drive to get there & the 25 bz admission fee. If you have a suitable vehicle, don't miss this.
