Beautiful rooms. Small and quaint. Comfortable beds with A/C and cable TV as well as free WIFI. The restaurant has good food and the location is right on the river! Beautiful small resort feel.

Hidden gem, you have to ask to find it! Clean rooms overlooking the New River, teaming with life. Friendly, helpful staff, good food, super clean. Inexpensive!
Small marina with boats for tours. Our private tour of the New river and Lamanai ruins started at 8 because we requested early to wildlife and beat the more full boats with cruise ship passengers.
Ignacio took his time showing us countless birds and animals, explaining the ruins. Crocodiles, monkeys, an osprey eating a still fighting fish, 7 types of herons, kingfishers, two types of monkeys, a taste of the allspice leaf, a whiff of the incense. Finished at 4:15! Worth every penny for $230 private tour/guide.
We had two nite private cabana, 2 dinners, two breakfast, transfers, private tour for about $400 for two of us.
Tranquil, wildlife, wonderful AND reasonable.
Tip: you must ASK for what you want here. Want a nice bungalow and not the motel room in town? Ask! A private tour, a ride somewhere, breakfast delivered? Just ask.response / report this review -

My husband and I recently stayed two nights at El Gran Mestizo in Orange Walk. We booked our stay after spending a night at their affiliate hotel, Hotel de la Fuente. We stayed at a small cabin overlooking the river. The cabin was quaint and the decor was rustic. We enjoyed hot water, air conditioning, and a delicious meal at their outdoor restaurant overlooking the river. The food was great and the service at both hotel and restaurant was outstanding. The manager was kind and friendly. Highly recommended. This is also where the Lamanai tour departs. So if you want to go to Lamanai, it would be very convenient to stay at El Gran Mestizo.

A few minutes drive from Orange Walk Town, but isolated enough to feel like another world.
