I enjoyed it and love it I have visited Caracol 2 times one in a school trip and in a family trip loved it
We visited this on a staff trip. The drive is spectacular running from town through the quaint villages and into the mountains, through pine forests, over the Macal River and into beautiful jungle. The road is gravel and rough but that's the adventure. The ruins are impressive and extensive, the remains of a powerful city. From atop the Kaana, the views are virtually undisturbed jungle for miles. The facilities were very well kept and the rangers helpful and familiar. Definitely will go again. Recommended 100%
This place was so awesome. I have been to many ruins, and this place felt special. Howler monkeys set the scene as we explored the ruins and tried to imagine what life was like 1000 years ago. It was definitely worth the drive. Don’t miss it.
This place is unbelievable!! The ruins are amazing!! Rent a car with a full tank of gas and plan for an all day experience. Leave early from San Ignacio around 7, because the road is rough and during the rainy season, at times can be really muddy. Pack your lunch and plenty of water and enjoy. The drive is through beautiful jungle and you will generally see wildlife on the way.
Incredible. On a scale with Chichen Itza except no crowds. Remote. Try the termites straight from the nest. Delish. Tastes like mint or cinnamon (unless you have bug spray on your fingers, then you won't taste them, but your fingers will taste like Deet).
Really nice and hidden place! Rent a car in San Ignacio and go there early (leave San Ignacio at 6:30 am). Afterwards you still have time to visit some waterfalls!
The 35 mile drive from San Ignacio takes almost 3 hours. Plan ahead if your going without a group. You should show up at the Belize Defense Force (BDF) Checkpoint by 9amThey 'escort" you to the ruins. Don't worry if your late..I was and they let me thru. I had to take their soldiers a box of chicken carcass. I figured they wouldn't let their guys go hungry and since the entrusted me with their lunch and no escort. My wife on the other hand was nervous. The entire road there has steep drop offs on one side and reverse pot holes (boulders really). Exciting adventure.
Great site. Would get five stars if it wasn't for the long bumpy ride to get there.
What an awe-inspiring site (and sight). We visited Caracol to both bird-watch and see the grounds. Incredible. The different complexes are well displayed; it is remote enough to not be crowded — we were there pretty early during the week and I could count maybe 15 people there. If you want an opportunity to tour a major Mayan ruin without the crowds, this is your place. Highly recommend. Oh, and the bird-watching is excellent too!
Nice place to visit at least once to prove yourself to be a true tourist
Caracol is beautiful and the site ruins are extensive. Since the ruins in Belize were a highlight for us, we were happy to visit. However, it takes a long time on a very rough road to get there. Compared to Xunantunich, the main, larger structure is also much less impressive (yet still wonderful in its own right). That said, Caracol has many more sites to explore which makes for a fun day (versus Xunantunich which has just the main site and is a short visit overall). Because Caracol is so inaccessible, that means there are also very few tourists there. You pretty much get to explore the ruins by yourselves (very small groups accompany you in the convoy).
Beautiful grounds. Amazing history and architectural marvel. The road was rough but the getting there is half the fun. So worthwhile.
Worth the drive if you've never been. Extensive site, we took 2.5 hours to take it all in.
What a site to see!!!!! So many ruins to visit. This place is off the beaten path 50 miles or so of dirt road over 13 concrete bridges with no guard rails, just wide enough for a car. Some are short some are long. Rained all the way up making the dirt road pool with water and making the off-road ride just as interesting. This place is about 3 hours from Black Rock Lodge which is where we stayed and used their super-excellent guides. Climbing up the temples was quite interesting while being slippery from the rain. The height is just enormous. Never thought I'd climb it but we did. At the top the views were stunning. Guatemala just 3 miles off in the distance. Very educational. This is really deep into the woods and takes quite a bit of time.
A hour drive from our place in the pine ridge..caracol offers ancient monumental art and temple pyramids
Bring a knowledgeable guide! They all speak English and Spanish. The chance to learn the history and walk among where great civilizations lived is an incredible experience.
Get to the top and take a deep jungle breath. It will be worth the exercise.
A military escort keeps the group safe.
Beautiful place to visit and see the Mayan history!
Amazing! You can climb the tallest pyramid and building in Belize. Well preserved and not too crowded. Try to arrive early because the park closes at 2 pm. Well worth the drive.
Really cool place to get a perspective on how the mayan civilization lived. The remains are interesting and extraordinary!
Stunning! Definitely worth the tortuous ride there. The remote location offers a really secluded experience with very few other visitors, and allows one to experience this ancient ruins undisturbed. Its quite large, with different structures uncovered, but many more still unearthed. Highly recommend going with a guide, there's no way you can get it all in by yourself. We joined a group there, and paid $25 per person to join the 2 person group. Wonderful experience and worth it to be introduced to Mayan culture in such a fashion.
