Is a memorial stupa built by Her Majesty,the mother of Third king in the memory of her son in 1974 after third king passed away in 1972.It is now spiritual place where people around practices religion by circulating stupa and can see how people practice religion by culture.
It is also an exemplary stupa of Tibetan culture of constructing stupa with temple inside with combination of Nyingmapa and kagyud traditions of sculpturing statutes with wrathful displays of Vajirakila .

Thimphu Chorten is one of the first thing which we see in Thimphu if you are part of a guided tour of the city's attractions, The complex consists of 3 buildings and 2 of them is open to public. It is a temple monument which has a smaller temple as well as the larger Stupa type temple.

Travel tip: Wear floaters or light footwear as we have to remove our footwear in each of these temples.

This place is located at walking distance from the clock tower square. I would recommend taking a walk to this place early in the morning as you can see many locals taking a walk and jogging around and it is a wonderful opportunity to interact with them.
The monument as such gets closed at around 5pm. With less knowledge of Buddhism I cannot comment on the significance of this place but as a monument itself it is quite impressive and is worth a visit.

The iconic chorten or stupa was built in 1974 in memory of the Third King of Bhutan, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. People from all walks of life can be seen circumambulating the structure, thanking for the blessings and seeking solace in their prayers.

The Chorten is a spiritual place for Buddhists. It is located at center of the Thimphu city. People mostly elderly Bhutanese circumambulate the Chorten and whirl the large red prayer wheels throughout the day . The chorten is a large white structure with a golden spire crowning it and a smaller golden spire above the front porch.

Chorten literally means ‘Seat of Faith’ and Buddhists often call such monuments, the ‘Mind of Buddha’. The chorten is an extraordinary example of Buddhist architecture and artwork with its gorgeous paintings and intricate sculptures.
It is a monument to the Third Druk Gyalpo and to World Peace.

This is a monument built in the memory of the beloved Third king of Bhutan, remembered dearly as the father of modern Bhutan.
Once, the monument was the tallest structure in the entire city It has seen the city grow over time around it.
2017 Royal Bhutan Flower Exhibition happened here and the event has given the place the much needed facelift.

Now Nu.300 entry fee is charged for visitors, but for locals in formal dress and international tourist it's free entry.

Enjoy the beautiful heritage site.

A very beautifully built Stupa in 1974 in the middle of Thimphu. A silent and meditating walk around would definitely keep your mind calm throughout. A must visit for all visiting Thimphu.

Located in the centre of Thimphu. It is also known as "the most visible religious landmark in Bhutan". It has four entrances, one entrance is open for devotees to visit the shrine. Evening time is the best time to visit, when the lights are turned on. Evening you can also find people making round over the central shrine and chanting mantras. Perfect serenity rules here.

The National Memorial Chorten in the centre of Thimphu is a place of gathering for the locals to come and pray, give offerings, meet and spend some of their time in this holy place. I visited on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and it was relaxing, with lots children playing and older folks circling the shrine.
