Going through US immigration here is a huge time saver, especially into FLL, but expect difficult officers. The US immigration officer tried to insist that my wife and I were not married yet (married almost 3 years), that she had immigrated on a K1 visa (even after looking at her visa and seeing that it was clearly an IR1), and that someone else besides me petitioned for her (wrong again). In the end we were through with no problems or significant delay, but if I had the option I would skip this and wait in the long line at FLL just to avoid this experience again.

The lines move quickly to get through both your tickets (some airlines have kiosks for quick ticketing) and for going through US Immigration (which also now have kiosks for US residents). After those lines, there are souvenir stores and fast food places upstairs in case you want to do that. There's also a smoking lounge for those interested in that.
