Good experience but poor tour, no organisation, the guide wasn’t organised at all. Not impressed!
We booked a 2 days / nights tour in the jungle and we enjoyed the time in the forest and at the lodge. The people who run the lodge and the guide are great people. Troubles started the second morning when the owner of the company with whom we booked the tour phoned us to tell us that we should have left by 6 AM even though the agreement was different and there was nobody organised by the company who could have taken us back at that time. Taking this matter to the client directly instead of solving it within the business is also very interesting .. Anyway when we were brought back to manaus in the afternoon of the same day we were left at manaus port without transportation to our hotel - even though the tour included "all transportations". All company phone numbers we have tried to reach were unavailable at that moment.. do not recommend!!
Before our trip to Manaus, we already knew we wanted something different, we wanted to stay in the middle of the jungle, we love hiking, we were looking for adventure and did not want to be in a region full with other groups. We literally visited all the tour agency's in Manaus. In all the agency's we heard the same story: lodge, fishing, cano, cayman, sunrise and the disappointing one night in the jungle Untill we got to the Amazon Backpackers of Claudio. He told us about a new region, adventure, no program and no big groups or hotels! It sounded great, so we left for 6 nights more than 500km north of Manaus to the small village of Petrolina do Norte.
We arrived at a beautiful typical wooden house for our homestay, were we met Nice and her 6! sons. We felt immediately part of the family. Together with our guides Marcelinho and local guide and oldest son Izaias, we discussed what they had planned for us, had a wonderful dinner (Nice is a great cook) and a good night rest. The next day started early with a good local breakfast, no bread with cheese and ham for this family! We got warm macaxeira (cooked casave) with butter, a delicacy, strong coffee, home made bread and cake. Nice start of the day. Next we drove to national park Viruá, where the nature is pure and magnificent. The hike is challenging, but rewarding. Along the road the guides tell about the medicinal plants, animal tracks and all other things they know about the jungle. Very special in Viruá is that there are different ecosystems. We saw our first group of monkey's, drank healing jungle water and ate worms. Adventure it was! Next night in a basecamp in the park surrounded by nature.
Our third day, we followed the estrada perdida. Along the road you see a lot of birds, insects, and if you are lucky like us even a deer! Because they never builded the bridges along the road there are several water crossings, you won't stay dry!
Day four starts early, good breakfast and preparing the backpacks for three nights in the jungle. The days are similar, the environment isn't. It was rain season, so we decided to take a good breakfast in the morning, don't stop for lunch and build our camp before the rain begins. For us this was the best part of the trip, we loved the time in the jungle, setting camp, getting up at night helping to keep everything dry, making fire, enjoying the nature, A large part of the last day you will spend walking in water, because the river is very high.
Last day of the trek you arrive at a small farm with a lot of animals where Nices husband works, from there you hike to the river, take the boat, place the nets, go fishing, eat the fresh fruits you collect from the trees and if you catch any, eat the freshest fish ever! You spent the last night at the farm under a shelter, so a whole night sleep! Needles to say that along the way you will see the monkey's spying on you, many different birds, snakes, spiders,
Last day you go back to the family, eat more fruits you have never seen in your life, last meal and back on the nightbus to Manaus!
Why take this tour?
- it is different, you are part of an expedition, not just following, you carry a backpack, hike a lot, help to set up camp, Adventure!
- you spent every moment in the nature, no hotels, no buffet, no cold beers
- you walk for days without meeting other people in unspoiled nature
- you see a lot of different ecosystems in one tour, learn a lot about medicinal plants and see many beautiful animals
- the homestay was perfect, Nice and her family are so friendly and they let you try all the new fruits, herbs and prepare the best meals!
- we got a very good service at Amazon Backpackers, it was way better than we expected
- you do all the activities from the classic tour, without the boring moment in your hotel which they call rest period before the next activity starts. It is one big adventure that doesn't stop!
I hate it
I went during the World Cup. They oversold the tour, and it was a giant mess. The tour guide was aloof, and confused about what to do with all the extra visitors he had. At some point, he probably thought "screw it" and got us back home as fast as he could.
I didn't have a room as promised, had to sleep on a hammock with holes that ripped a little throughout the night. By morning, my ass was 4 inches from the floor. I only weigh 150lbs.
There were no piranha, as advertised.
There were no pink dolphins, as advertised.
We woke up one morning at 5:00 am to watch birds. The guide woke up, said "hi" to all of us, and went back to bed. All of of tourists were hanging around in the daybreak wondering what was going on.
