Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company "GPIC " was founded in the fifth month of December 1979 as a nucleus for cooperation between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), in the field of fertilizers and petrochemicals industry, thus making use of natural gas, which is produced by Bahrain as a raw material for the industry. The establishment of the company came to be a joint venture owned equally between both the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, represented by the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) and the State of Kuwait, represented by the Petrochemical Industries Company. The Board of Directors is composed of representatives of the three contributors. It was the first project of the company is the establishment of a petrochemical complex on an area of 60 hectares of reclaimed land in Sitra island where the project consisted in the beginnings of the manufacturers for the production of ammonia and methanol as well as utilities. The actual production of these plants began in May 1985 with production capacity of 000,1 metric tons per day each, they have been filed later to become the 200.1 tons per day in 1989.
