A haven of quiet in bustling Ghent, this is sadly no longer a beguinage, but is now private housing. Something of the atmosphere of the cloister still remains, and the management ensures that visitors behave with respect. A double row of tiny houses surrounds a green lawn which was formerly the churchyard, and an elegant chapel forms the heart of the commune. The brickwork is kept pristine and reddened with oxblood to sustain the uniform appearance of the residences.

There are two beguinages in Ghent and I think this one is the much more interesting one. It is smaller and older but it gives you a much better sense of the community that the female residents established in the Middle Ages. It won't take long to walk around and see it - but the church is a highlight.

Village in the city. Best kept secret of Ghent. Not ruined by herds of tourists.
