Background of the Establishment of the University:
Khulna, situated in the southern part of the country, is the third largest Metropolitan city in Bangladesh. The region is replete with natural resources that need to be properly exploited and utilized for the country’s continued progress. Mongla Port, the second largest port in Bangladesh, the Sundarbans, the largest Mangrove forest in the world and the World Heritage Site as well, Shipyard and the bourgeoning thicket of trade centers and industry in and around Khulna are the distinguishing features of this region. Khulna has already been dotted with a number of higher educational institutions including Khulna University (KU) and Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET). As the region is a thriving one, it needs more Universities that can open the doors to the students for pursuing higher learning and knowledge. Considering all that, seventeen benevolent souls from Khulna and Dhaka, who are the members of the Board of Trustees, came forward to establish a Private University in Khulna. They took initiatives for the highest interest of the nation and came out successful in their concerted efforts. Thus North Western University at Khulna came into being to play an enterprising role in the field of higher education of the private Sector. The Ministry of Education, the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, passed an order on 18 November 2012, for setting up this University under the Private University Act, 2010, which was concurrently approved by Bangladesh University Grants Commission on 24 December 2012.
North Western University at Khulna is an independent non-profit socially-oriented Private University. It has the authority to exercise its power to house any subjects of topical interests, (after the approval of Govt. and UGC) and to confer Degrees and certificates in those programs that are conducted here. It can create better opportunities to provide training, to hold seminars and symposiums from time to time. Also, it can conduct any applied research and developmental programs as and when required.
