  Set out in 1860 by the Alston family, Lalchand is one of the earliest tea gardens created in Sylhet.
  
  '"There was no tea on the other side of Luskerpore, but a ride of seven or eight miles through the forest brought one to the Lalchand Tea Estate, one of the properties of the Alston family, of which M. H. Alston was part proprietor and manager.
  Mat Alston, under a somewhat ceremonious manner, unusual in a Sylhet setting of kutcha bungalows and mud floors, unsuccessfully concealed a sound head and a warm heart. He had come out to tea in 1877 , so that in 1894 he must have been nearly forty. Like Sanderson, he was above all pettiness, and his kindly and tolerant nature had a good influence on the younger men, for whom the life was really hard and unsympathetic. I don't know if the fact that he was a proprietor while other managers were employees made the difference but Mat Alston had a wider outlook on life than the others. He was an experienced horseman, and a fine hockey player, although I did not seem him play until my return to Sylhet in 1899. I shall have occasion to refer to him again, but I may mention here that although the years are accumulating he is in splendid health at the present time, and that as one of my oldest friends I enjoy his occasional visits to me enormously.
