Maulana Mohammad Ali College was established in 1957 by Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani and was named after Mohammad Ali Jouhar, an important leader of the Khilafat movement of British India. In 1975 the government of Bangladesh nationalised the college.The nationalization ceremony was presided over by President of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

On the first day of July 1957 Govt. M. M. Ali College, Kagmari, Tangail opened its doors to students with the name of Mawlana Mohammad Ali College. The College was set up in a picturesque part of the place known as Kagmari on 2070 decimal of land.The College started its activities with 3 Faculties, 15 teachers, 200 students and 1 dormitories (Halls of Residence) for the students. At present the College consists of 5 Faculties, 15 Departments,2 hostels. The number of students and teachers has risen to about 3303 and 40 respectively. The main purpose of the College was to create new areas of knowledge and disseminate this knowledge to the society through its students. Since its inception the University has a distinct character of having distinguished scholars as faculties who have enriched the global pool of knowledge by making notable contributions in the fields of teaching and research.The Govt. M. M. Ali College is dedicated to the advancement of learning, and is committed to promoting research in all fields of knowledge. As there are plans for further expansion of facilities, plans for new avenues and opportunities, the course curricula are updated and new research projects are undertaken every year. The Govt. M. M. Ali College is well prepared to meet the challenges of the future days with its spirit of freedom, justice and truth as a foundation concomitant to the objectives envisaged by the founding fathers.The open-minded character of the University of Dhaka embodying the features of beauty and historical origins can be seen as one enters the campus.
