The Sufia Kamal National Public Library(Bengali: সুফিয়া কামাল জাতীয় গণগ্রন্থাগ) of Bangladesh is the largest public library in Bangladesh and houses the central administration of the Department of Public Libraries, under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. The library was previously named as "Central Public Library" between 2004 and 2010.The library is located in Dhaka'sShahbag neighbourhood.
The auditorium (Shawkat Osman Auditorium) of the library is a major venue for cultural events in Dhaka, including the International Short and Independent Film Festival. It also houses the Library Training Institute funded and managed by the Library Association of Bangladesh (LAB). It also has a reprography service, in-house bindery and conservation section.

The foundation stone for Dhaka Central Public Library was laid in 1954 with the Registrar of Dhaka University as part-time Librarian. Designated to be the centre for the public library system in the then East Pakistan on the basis of the recommendations made by Australian Library consultant Mr. L C Key in 1955, it was opened to the public on 22 March 1958 with a stock of 10,040 books. In 1978 the library moved to its building near the Shahbag Intersection from its original building designed by pioneering Bangladeshi architect Mazharul Islam, which went on to house the Dhaka University Central Library.
The Department of the Public Libraries was established with Bangladesh Central Public Library as its headquarters in 1984. Between 1980 and 1985 UNESCO provided nearly 9.9 million Bangladeshi taka to develop the library.
The library has undergone a number of name changes. Previously it was named the Sufia Kamal National Public Library after the Bangladeshi writer Begum Sufia Kamal. However, in 2004 the name was changed to the "Central Public Library", amid protests from cultural activists who cited Sufia Kamalworthy of the honour. However, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party State Minister for Cultural Affairs, Selina Rahman, defended the decision at the time, stating, "We're not changing the name, rather restoring it to its original one. Our aim is not to name any government institution after any person."However, in 2010 the subsequent Awami League administration again changed the name back to Sufia Kamal National Public Library.

The library is very beautiful. It is situated the South of National Museum and North of DU mosque. The environment of the library is quite good for reading. It is neat and clean. Keep quite is must here. There are many shelves where the books are kept by their subjects. I'm very much proud to make a visit the library in 18.10.2018. It is a memorable day for me indeed.

If you love books just get here. Its govt run so services wont be top notch but you get probably the biggest collection of books in here. You can enter and read without being a member for as long as you want. So a fair trade off.

I used to go there to study with some serious concentration for several hours. It completely served my purpose.

Reading Room Environment: 10/10 [Perfectly silent environment, just what I needed.] ;

Reading Room Availability: 7/10 [Many people just grab the seat with something and go out to complete their other works. So even though there are many empty chairs in the reading rooms you can't seat because the seat is already taken. This is strictly prohibited by the library rule but not maintained at all. So its hard to find a vacant seat if you go there after a couple of hours of opening] ;

Book Availability : 7/10 [I only used the science reading room where I found that there is a scarcity of books on contemporary topics. Can't comment on the collection of general reading room and children's reading room though]

Food: 8/10 [There is a canteen on the premise from where one can have lunch or snacks at any time. Can't comment on food quality as I didn't use it anytime. To me this canteen availability is enough, no one goes there to judge their food. ] ;

Facility to Leave Belongings: 7/10 [You are not allowed to take bags inside the library. So there is a token based shelf service available at the premise outside the library building. Security is great but not appropriately available for large number of people those go there] ;

Parking: 8/10 [Enough space on the premise to park. Can't say about cars. I only uses bicycle which I found very convenient to park on the premise];

I've been looking for a place near me to read books, to note. Here you can read for hours as guest, photocopy, lend books being a member. When you need refreshment take a walk outside, eat at the canteen outside, have mint tea with a little walk. The entrance is particularly eye catching, directly goes to second floor with lots of steps, you can sit over the steps and pass some time. The book collection is good. Lacking a digital catalogue and searching causes the biggest frustration, also the ban over bringing personal books and laptop. My suggestion to make reading more enjoyable: make it possible to have tea and coffee while reading, and canteen special benefits card for members.

National Public Library is a very nice place. There are thousands of books to study. But now a day people reluctant to study. Most of young boys and girls. Spent there spare time, in surfing social media like Facebook. Gradually book is getting back dated element. Young stars are not interested to spend their time to read a book. Public Libraries are an integral part of a democratic society. Eradication of illiteracy from the society, preservation of reading materials, development of education, aware democratic consciousness, develop the moral values, socio-economic development and above all to serve the
information needs of the general public are the basic objectives of the public libraries. In order toachieve the above mentioned goals, the Government of the than Pakistan established the PublicLibrary with 10,040 books on 22 March 1958 at Dhaka University area. In 1977 library wasshifted to its present position in 1977 and it was made open to the public in 1978. Public Library of Bangladesh is the largest library in Bangladesh. In 1996 it was entitled “Begum Sufia Kamal National Public Library”. It is situating at shahbag, Dhaka. In this library full of old and unusual books. It have more than 119750 books. This place is open for all people. I like this place very much.

This is the national library of Bangladesh. Best place for reading books. Anyone can enter here for reading purpose. There is also a big auditorium and food place. Photo exhibition, movie exhibition, book fair is very common here.
