DO NOT GO HERE. WORST EXPERIENCE I'VE HAD TRAVELING IN YEARS.
Generally, the service at this cafe is pretty bad, though the manager is a fairly genuine guy. I haven't that much friendly service in Sarajevo generally outside of high-end hotels, so I suppose I mostly don't mind the "rude" waiters here, and, on the plus side, this cafe is open quite late compared to most its neighbors. But, as of tonight, that's where the positive things I could say end. I just had one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a cafe or restaurant in my life.
Highlights are as follows: The waiter, who speaks no English, threw the receipt I politely requested in my face. OK, whatever, you can brush that off right? BUT HE THEN REPORTED ME TO THE POLICE OFFICER SITTING AT THE TABLE NEXT TO ME after he informed me the restaurant could neither except my Bosnian marks coins nor a credit card. So, 3-5 additional Bosnian police officers gathered, and the officer he spoke to, who was having a coffee next to me, began making statements like, "Where are you from?", "How do we know that if you get up to pay for this [3 KM] coke, you will ever come back?", "So, even if they had a sign that says they don't take coins, you don't read Bosnian. So how would you be able to read it?" "Why don't you use your brain? Who goes to a cafe without enough cash to pay?"
Maybe even these statements from a police officer sitting next to you in a foreign Balkans country sound innocuous now, but, for anyone who has ever travelled, I hope you will empathize with how disconcerting this might feel at 1AM on a week night in a part of the world where NGOs seem to regularly publish reports about "police corruption" or "shake downs".)
If there is any silver lining to this story (there isn't), the manager has seen me at least five times before. So, instead of marching off to the ATM (and probably ending up with a call to the police station being made), I went up to him to ask his "permission" to walk the next door ATM and get cash to pay. He then just nodded, made a joke that went "Ah, but you can't get only 3KM from the ATM!" (Really funny, dude) and asked me why I hadn't already. But, at least he let me go. After I came back to the cafe to pay and try and speak privately with him about the whole thing, the waiter basically tried to block me and he did nothing about it. The waiter, who is a lot bigger than I am, kept giving me intimidating/dirty looks and standing threateningly close to me.
So this whole thing was more or less a scene out of a goon movie. I just paid 3KM - I did not get to even drink my Coke - to spend almost an hour being bullied by a non-verbally threatening, non-English speaking waiter and a local police officer under the at least implicit threat of being arrested when all I was trying to do was finish some work and happened to make the mistake of going to this cafe because it was central and still open.
Customer service in the Balkans / Eastern Europe is maybe generally not the best, but this was really the limit
