I always thought people who worked with food had to wear gloves and hair nets or at least had to have long hair put up. Well not where we had breakfast this morning. We watched staff scratch their head then handle food, take food from a plate, eat it then continue to serve, use the coffee thermometer to design in the coffee froth but take it out, wipe it clean with their bare hands and put it back into the coffee repeatedly. Not impressed. Very slow service and people who ordered after us got their food before us.

A nice small cafe nestled in between the botanical gardens and the entrance to the Red Arrow. Reasonable portions with forest views.

Incredibly slow service , and dreadful hygiene.
Nearly an hours wait for a Caesar salad and vegetable bruschetta.
    Cafe only 1/2 full
More disappointing however was the lack of basic food handling protocols in the open kitchen.
The chef mixed the Caesar with his hands in between pushing his long hair behind his ears then wiping his hands on the back of his jeans
The was observed on multiple occasions during our 1 hour wait for our order- not a food handling glove in sight
    Won't be coming back!

Small but nice menu for food. Nice looking baked goods. Full coffee menu. Nice seating area that's shaded and has some ferns hanging around. It's a calm spot despite the fact that it's bustling even in a random weekday morning. It's by the gallery and gift shop, and there's a general arts center in the building. The menu has a few fish dishes and burgers and salads and such, not inexpensive but probably about average based on what idea in downtown cairns. They play jazz and it feels like a very local spot. It's right by one entrance to the steep all's to the red and blue walking trails. There's quite a bit of seating, both in real tables and on couches and stools. There's parking nearby for the botanic garden. They have a few boutique sodas, iced tea, and coconut water in the fridge. The coffee milkshake isn't thick, but it has strong coffee flavor and it's like a rich iced coffee; plus it's served in a handled mason jar, so what's better than that?
