I attended the commemorative service for the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park on the 13th day in 2006. It was my first visit there and I sent a programme and badge down to my grandfather Frank Douglas Chivers in Glen Waverley Victoria whom recently passed away in July 2014 from a long endured illness. My grandfather was a Lance Corporal and the last surviving of his unit 24th Australian Infantry Battalion (Kooyong Regiment) red and white diamond which were sent to Papua New Guinea in WWII defending Australia from Japanese attack. At the time he had no idea there was such a place of dedication, and I can only imagine his surprise of the news. The only information I can recall of his experience was as a scout on the front line fighting in the jungle he had been hit by shrapnel. As I now live in FNQ and cannot attend the funeral in Melbourne, I will honour his memory and service to this country by returning to Rocky Creek War Memorial Park and request a plaque be placed on the wall of remembrance for him. I love you Grandpa. Rest in Peace
