Had a new lens fail during an Olympus recommended firmware update. Instructions were followed precisely and during the same session other lenses, and the camera body, succeeded in upgrading. After some internet research, there are hundreds of reports of similar. What is incredible is that there is no user remedy for this problem. The lens is totally bricked if the update fails. Unbelievable in 2020 not to have engineered a system that is fault tolerant and where this is some sort of basic reset & reload procedure.
So, forced to make a warranty claim. From the first email, Olympus insisted this is not a warranty issue. Aus. Consumer Guarantee is very clear on this being a major failure with a new product a couple of months from purchase. Olympus did then actually repair the lens free of charge ‘as an act of goodwill’ according to every communication on the matter. However, as per their own notes, they had to replace a main board in the lens (thus, without doubt a hardware failure).
A very frustrating experience – from the fact that no firmware operation should be able to totally brick a $2000 lens (not even manual use is possible!) - with zero possibility of the owner solving the issue. Add to that Olympus behaving as if they are doing you a huge favourwhen in fact they are simply doing the absolute minimum they are legally required to do to support their products. And to add insult to injury they won’t cover the postage. I could argue with them and get consumer affairs involved, but really it’s just easier to add this to the ‘reasons to switch systems’ list that is growing longer by the day…
Lovely facilities and most staff are genuine and knowledgeable. Good catering/food for our training day.
Dropped in for a workshop with Karl and Brett. Great to have a little tour of the facilities to learn about the other aspects of the Olympus business. The medical side is fascinating but I'll stick with the cameras. The intermediate workshop even taught old salty me some new knowledge and actually explained a concept I've grappled with forever in a way I understood (I won't say which one is too embarrassing lol). Really enjoyed the presentation. Thanks.
At the beginning of August I purchased an Olympus OMD em1 II camera with 12-40mm lens. After only a week I dropped the camera and lens on to a wooden floor. Although the drop was only 300mm or from just below my knee, this damaged the lens and I got the “check the lens” message.
I sent the lens to the Olympus Service Centre in Sydney with the honest admission that I had dropped the camera and lens. Today I received it back from Sydney. Three weeks from sending the lens by mail, to receiving it back by mail, repaired under warranty, with no charge and no questions asked. That’s impressive.
