Well run gallery with exceptional exhibitions. Visited the Edith Head exhibit. Fantastic job. Beautiful building and setting, helpful staff, good cafe.

For quite a remote and small town, the gallery is really impressive. The expositions were very interesting, the building a piece of art in itself. Nice garden at the back too.

Lovely old building with some excellent pieces on display. A particularly fine collection of China, some sound old masters, and a good range of contemporary art. Good cafe too. And seriously great old building. Cannot say that enough. Particularly good use of painted wall and ceiling panels to enhance art.

I recently attended the wonderful Edith Head exhibition here. It was informative and interesting and so well run. We booked a specific time and didn't have to deal with many crowds. Everyone was very helpful and I was very impressed with the quality of the exhibition. Bendigo is a great community and a trip up from Melbourne is well worth it.

Such an incredibly beautiful building. Original on the outside and completely modem inside. Some very good artist as a regular display, but I was there for the Edith Head pieces.
They were just breath taking. I wished there was more information on each dress, as some looked different from the original movie, and more on Edith, who was an interesting woman in her own right, but I enjoyed it none the less.

Victorian architecture is beautifully restored. The art collection is extensive and the rooms are painted in colours sympathetic to the period the structure was built. Cafe serves good food at reasonable prices

This is a lovely little gallery. (By little I mean compared to the NGV or purely by the size of premises and collection, and not by being condescending.)
It is beautifully presented and the collections are displayed in an architectural and colour appropriate context. The 19th century collection was beautifully curated and displayed.
I went to the gallery specifically to see the Edith Head & Hollywood exhibition, and it was superb. A beautiful selection of items, that were wonderfully displayed, and with a fantastic amount of supplementary information provided on the displays as well as via film excepts and interviews etc. I spent a good two hours in the exhibition and could have spent at least another hour just going back to favourite elements and soaking it all thoroughly in. (But I really needed a cup of tea.) A seriously good exhibition in a great gallery. Definitely be going back even with a two hour drive from Melbourne.
As an addendum, the galley shop was tiny but excellent. I bought much more than I originally intended (just the exhibition catalogue) but do not regret it at all.
And they make good tea and coffee in the gallery cafe.response / report this review -

Jennifer gave me an engrossing, highly personalised tour of the gallery giving interesting back stories and insights into both the buildings and many of the artworks. The way she could adapt to my level of art knowledge was fantastic. Highly recommended.

A very good collection, which some visitors might not expect. Bendigo had a lot of rich residents after the gold rush. Some of their treasures are housed here. Notable for a couple of Tom Roberts works not on current display, a set of Victorian Nymphs in marble, and several impressive set pieces far too big for the average home. I loved one of the modern galleries which collected strange creatures in paint, print and sculpture.

The art gallery always has new exhibits and is always great to visit. It is operated on donations for entry, making it affordable for everyone. Our three year old son even loves it here. Once a month they have a morning where they have activities for kids. The Cafe is also amazing with utterly amazing food.

I have always loved visiting this gallery, but my last visit was less than satisfying. The woman at reception should not be working in customer service. She completely ignored us, and only spoke after we addressed her first, but even then her tone and mannerisms were bitchy and pretty much told is she hated her job. The pieces being exhibited were also quite boring, most of it was all stuff I saw last time I was here, over 12 months prior. Overall a very disappointing experience.
