My son absolutely loves his martial arts classes and looks forward to it every weekend. The trainers are so child friendly and know how to encourage kids to learn and be confident with their skills! Lucky to be located near our place and will definitely keep going as kid always has takeaway lessons that are practical and useful!
Great academy. Everyone is treated equally with the same respect no matter how young or old you are. My child loves attending and looks forward to her sessions every week. The teachers are wonderful and patient and take time to show moves. Recommend this place.
I enrolled my 4 year old daughter to boost her confidence as she can suffer from social anxiety and can be extremely shy.
I have previously done martial arts for a number of years and have not experienced a school that is as patient with the kids, than this school.
They allowed me to stay in the kids room and participate in the class with her (usually parents aren't allowed into the Mini Dragons class), until she was ready to attend class alone (it took about 2 months!).
I have seen my daughter develop into an outgoing little girl who is an active participant in the class. I love the teachers at this school and think they put a lot of effort and care into their classes. Most importantly, they have the patience to deal with kids who struggle or take longer to settle in than others.
The school also teaches and encourages kids to be good people with a good moral compass. They teach the kids about holistic approaches to overall good wellbeing (eating good food, being active (ie. faces not stuck to a screen) and being contributors in their household (helping by cleaning or setting up the table before a meal etc).
I highly recommend this school and the teachers. I've never had any issues and they are completely approachable if you have any questions etc.
Been bringing to kids to AMA for a few months now, and we love it!
It's important to know though, that this is NOT just for kids!
It's the only martial arts centre I could find in Sydney that does family classes, so adults and kids can all train at the same time. As such, we travel half-way across Sydney every week just to come here but what great family bonding time it is!
Love the flexibility in class times, so we can always find a class that fits around the inevitably busy kids' birthday party schedule.
Paying for four of us means it's not cheap, but hey, that's my fault for having too many kids, not theirs!
Great way to keep the kids active and healthy, while boosting your own flexibility and fitness.
Great for teaching the kids discipline and respect and Miss Sarah does a wonderful job supporting everybody and sharing words of wisdom.
Plus, it's so much fun!
Where else can middle-aged dads spar with one another under the guise of family bonding!
THIS REVIEW IS PART ONE OF TWO. I HAVE ALOT TO SAY.
To completely sum up my review: This place is run more like a business than a martial arts center. Before I begin, I would like to state I respect their choices and ways of teaching. The head instructors do in fact have a tremendous amount of skill.
I am a simple teenage guy who trained with this establishment for a very long time. I was an instructor as well, and have seen how the classes, teacher attitudes and content taught has changed over time. As proof, I've included a picture of my instructor and black belt uniform.
Where classes used to be taught by mainly qualified, adult instructors; classes are predominately now assisted by tired, extremely under qualified teenagers with a single head instructor to lead. Children as young as 8 or 9 are been made to take phone calls and silence crying little dragons. The majority of the instructors have little to no experience in childcare or possess interest in their jobs, only smiling when in view of the public. Fake smiles and fake enthusiasm all around, especially in the Little dragons classes. (Which may I add is closer to a babysitting service than a martial arts class. That's what happens when you expect 3 and 4 year olds to behave perfectly)
As years progressed, it also felt like the standards to progress through levels has also decreased. Being a black belt wasn't really all that special here. I was constantly seeing children going completely unprepared into grading and passing anyways, even I began to do that.Their not going to fail someone in a grading when the parents have spent hundreds of dollars to give their children 15 minutes in the spotlight.
It seems as if the incentive of money has completely taken over. A prime example of this is the introduction of the red and black belt. Its hard to believe they would add a whole mandatory extra belt level simply to make parents pay for extra gradings. And the probationary black belt with the white stripe! Its basically forcing parents to go an extra year just to get their kids name written on a proper black belt.
Mini dragons is also a waste of money, and is just a simple cash grab. There is no merit in dragging around an uninterested kid who can barely walk around an obstacle course.
The amount of overpriced events such as the annual tournaments or movie nights seem ridiculous as well.
I see parents sigh in dismay when they see the costs of the tournament events. Would you really pay $50 for the chance for your kid to push another kid out of a square? Or kick a pad once? Or even to play a modified game of tag? I sure as heck wouldn't, but that doesn't matter because EVERYONE gets trophies. To make it worse, when tournaments are about to happen, they make the children pass around and touch the trophies to make them want them even more. Children look so sad when instructors yank trophies out of their hands. At least parents can fix their sadness with a bit of money.
To give merit where its due, I can confirm;
Yes the community is quite amazing, especially if you're confident (extroverted) enough to make it into the main circles.
The classes offered are generally well structured and can be extremely enjoyable.
The unbreakable formula of the classes can be comforting.
The equipment and facility are state-of-the-art and are pretty good.
The convenience of the large timetable is nice.
The classes are very good for general fitness, the classes cover a range of skill specific exercises such as flexibility and strength.
PLEASE GO TO PART TWO.
