If you love the Sound of Music do not take a van or bus tour. 3 of the 4 hours has nothing to do with The Sound of Music. The whole tour is a waste of time and money. Take a walking tour or a bicycle tour. The tour guides have very interesting tidbits of information about the movie and the family. But take the tour in the late afternoon or early evening in the summer so you are not walking in the hot sun

Had a snafu with our reservation and didn't have the correct sized bus for our party of 11 people. They worked hard to fix it but the guide we had, Al, was pretty boring. He didn't have a lot of charm and there was very little information about the movie during the tour. Most of the tour consisted of, "there is where they filmed this scene" with little background or supporting information. My wife and I had done a previous tour many years ago which was filled with a motivated guide, energy, and spirit which provided a lot of fun to the tour. Most of us on this tour were a bit bored.

We had Chris as our driver and he was interesting to hear as well as talk to. We liked the fact that the minibus got us into some rural lanes that the big coach tours could not.

I booked the original sound of music and Hallstatt tour and was really expecting to have a great time. After waiting for two hours in the hotel room without being picked up, I called the office and left a voice message but no one answered back. Then I called the hotel front desk and the staff told me the driver came by but was looking for me in wrong room number and wrong last name and then left. I got really upset because apparently the tour operator took down the wrong information (aka. one number of the room number and the first character of my last name). So I asked the front desk to call the driver to see if he can still take me to this tour. After waiting for another half hour, the driver came back and took me to his car. There were 3 other travelers in his car and the first thing he did was taking me to the office to make the payment. I told him that I don't think i should pay the full price because I didn't get a chance to see the first attraction stop and all the time I've been wasting due to the operator's fault. The driver called the operator and then passed the phone to me. The operator said "you either pay the full price for the tour or you stay at home" , without any apologies for his stupid mistake. I cannot imagine a tour service company can talk to a customer in such an extremely rude way. Overall, I wasted the best time of the day to wait and deal with this unqualified tour service and by the end they ruined my mood for traveling. Hope you can take my experience as an alert when trying to book a daily tour in Salzburg.

On the recommendaton of Rick Steves, my wife and I took the Sound of Music tour of Salzburg. While we like the movie, we aren't fanatics and mainly took the tour to of the Salzburg area. Our tour guide Rosa Maria was great. Not only did she provide interesting information about the Salzburg and surronding areas, but she was simply a really nice person that is obviously very proud of her home. The tour consisted of interesting Sound of Music sites and trivia, but also great information about the Salzburg and surrounding areas. I would recommend this tour (ask for Rosa Maria) for anyone that is interested in seeing more of the Salzburg area than just the city center. If you're a Sound of Music fanatic, let Rosa Maria know at the beginning of the tour, otherwise sit back, relax enjoy the Salzburg area and be an active participant in the tour.
