Absolutely amazing airport! Well organized, nice places to eat although as for Dubai quite expensive, also You can easily find here a place to lay down and rest if you have to wait a while for your connection.

The history of civil aviation in Dubai started in July 1937 when an air agreement was signed for a flying boat base for the aircraft of Imperial Airways with rental of the base at about 440 rupees per month—this included the guards' wages.[citation needed] The Empire Flying Boats also started operating once a week flying east to Karachi and west to Southampton, England. By February 1938, there were four flying boats a week.[citation needed]
In the 1940s, flying from Dubai was by flying boats operated by British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), operating the Horseshoe route from Southern Africa via the Persian Gulf to Sydney.

The first jet aircraft to land on the new runway at Dubai Airport in 1965 was a Comet from Middle East Airlines
Construction of the airport was ordered by the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, in 1959. It officially opened in 1960 with its first airfield, at which time it was able to handle aircraft the size of a Douglas DC-3 on a 1,800-metre-long (5,900 ft) runway made of compacted sand.[18] Three turning-areas, an apron and small terminal completed the airport that was constructed by Costain.
In May 1963, construction of a 9,200-foot (2,800 m) asphalt runway started. This new runway, alongside the original sand runway and taxiway opened in May 1965, together with several new extensions were added to the Terminal Building, hangars erected, Airport and Navigational aids were installed. The installation of the lighting system continued after official opening and was completed in August of that year. During the second half of the 1960s several extensions, equipment upgrades like a VHF omnidirectional range (VOR) and an instrument landing system (ILS) as well as new buildings were constructed. By 1969, the airport was served by 9 airlines serving some 20 destinations.response / report this review -

Like flying into a shopping mall. If duty free is your thing this is the place for you. Not as many food options as you'd think and the business lounges charge $100 for 4 hours and those 4 hours must be 4 hours before your flight leaves so if you have an extended layover your best bet is either a in terminal hotel or a bench if you can find one. Pretty crowded airport.

We have to walk a lot for boarding. No assistance to guide a passenger for boarding and gate number also not printed on boarding pass.

Worst airport I ever visit. If i can review it with less than 1 i will do. One of the most crowded airports in the world with only ONE small smoking room, very dirty no fans inside it. Travellers move from/to airplane via bus. If you can increase your travel budget a little percentage you can avoid yourself this durable experience.

Too shiny, too much walking between gates, baggage, passport control, too much shopping in the way if you need to get to your departure gate in time. But otherwise a good airport. Sufficient parking for pickup of guests. Taxi lines move very slow given the amount of arriving travellers.

I visited the airport in transit (connecting flights with Emirates).
The signs have been quite ok, it was always clear how to proceed from gate to gate. What I found really noteworthy was the free access to buggies for children throughout the Terminals.
Apart from that, during a 6h waiting time, I found the remaining negative aspects:
- there's too few toilets in a terminal
- more spaces to sit comfortably are needed
- more deck-chairs are needed

Well organised, signposted, staff speak English, water fountains, easy transfer between terminals. Spacey, comfortable. Free WiFi for one hour.

The airport is quite huge with numerous terminals.
You also get 1 hour of free WiFi so use it wisely.

Only connection between terminals is a taxi. There is no direct connection, train or bus. Taxis only take cash. Quite medieval for a ultra modern city.

Customer service is very poor and receiving your luggage takes about an hour, more than a flight I was on. Also they have put three flights on the same luggage belt!
