  Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Clinic In Mutare

  Diabetic retinopathy is the most common micro-vascular complication of diabetes. It can result in irreversible blindness unless it is detected and treated early. Regular screening conducted annually or as dictated by the stage of retinopathy can enables initiation of treatment schedule that can save sight and maintain good quality of life for the patient.

  Highlands Eye Clinic has commissioned a diabetic retinopathy (DR) screen...ing clinic every every Thursday in Mutare Zimbabwe. This is the only clinic dedicated to early detection of DR in Zimbabwe. It is located on Third Floor suite 19 Mutare Medical Centre 123 Herbert Chitepo Street Mutare.

  Patients can be referred from the Diabetic clinic at Mutare general hospital, medical practitioners clinics in the city of Mutare or be self referred.

  Presenting patients will be administered a questionnaire to record history including age, sex, duration and type of diabetes, current treatment and record of last fasting blood sugar (FBS), presence of other diseases including cataract, hypertension, diabetic foot heart or renal problems. A comprehensive eye examination will be performed to detect any anterior segment conditions associated or not associated with DM. A dilated fundus examination to detect and grade any retinopathy detected will be performed. Laboratory tests for Fasting Blood glucose (FBS) and cholesterol, HDL, LDL and Glycosylated Hemoglobin.

  Patients found to have sight threatening retinopathy or centre involving macula oedema will be referred for laser photocoagulation and /or Anti VEGF injection

  Health education on diabetes, diabetic retinopathy and its potential to cause to cause blindness and the importance of regular eye examination to enable early detection and treatment of retinopathy will be delivered in a counseling session. it is hoped that this screening clinic will contribute to prevention of blindness due to this feared complication of diabetes

  Highland Eye Clinic has been inspected by the Health Professions Authority of Zimbabwe and approved to be licensed as a service provider.
