Sibeso Mulundano posted: I remember when I was still in primary school, my late father never used to give me pocket money on a diamond platter all the time. I had to work and earn it. So I'd ask him to give me all his dirty clothes then ask mom to add hers as well. The good part about it all is he'd ask me to name the price of each piece of clothing. So I charged k1 for a pair of socks, k2 for a T-shirt k3.50 for an office shirt etc.

After I washed, I'd wait by the line just... to make sure the clothes dried in time. Then I'd iron them the best way I knew how and folded the ones that needed to be folded. My father would then inspect the clothes, smile and ask how much he owed me that particular day. I kept records so I'd just hand over the bill. He wouldn't complain whether it was too much or too little. He'd reach into his pocket, sometimes even pretend there was no money then he'd see my smile vanish then booom- pull out the few ngwees I had worked for. I used to feel so proud and excited, jump and sing my heart out.

There are times when I'd wash but he wouldn't say anything, let alone pay me. He wouldn't even smile and I wondered why. My heart would hurt and I'd feel like crying. What I didn't know is he was actually preparing me to expect anything from relatives and friends and to be ready for anything, how life can be so unpredictable. you work today you don't get paid, you don't get the recognition you hope for, that people won't always be happy and how relatives and friends will not always be there for you. He always told me to do my part and God would take care of the rest. I thank God for the moments we spent together and the lessons he taught me. Big girls don't cry well maybe just a little. They sing, they pray and keep on keeping on.

If numbers in Mathematics were given an opportunity to speak, I think some were going to accuse zero and one . Because any number that is multiplied by zero gives zero. Zero will bring down numbers to nothing. There are some people in life who are like number zero. If you associate with them no matter how great your value is they will bring you down to zero. How about one? Any number multiplied by one remains unchanged no matter how big it is. There are some people in life that are like one. No matter how they touch your life you remain the same. You don't grow, you don't improve, you remain at the same level. So here is the twist. What kind of person are you and who do you associate with?

    Dear Parents,

When our children use the Internet to search for images for projects or anything related to school work, please encourage them to use _Kiddle_ instead of Google.

KidL is a child-specific researcher supported by Google, which prevents the appearance of things that are not suitable for them.

Daniel Mudenda wrote; ENGLISH FOR CERTIFICATION English is used as a language of instruction in the Zambian curriculum at least from Grade 5. It is also the language of communication in the white-collar business corridors.

Thus, it is a must-pass for every school leaver who is worth their salt at Grade 12. This has been the case even at Grade 9 until a few years ago.

    ...

All subjects are important, get me right -- but surely, it is right to put everything in its right place.

If English shall be maintained as a language of instruction in our schools, all learners laying their foundations for career development must give themselves a good opportunity to be equipped adequately for various contexts and purposes.

If a learner who thinks one subject is 'hard' and so, they should shed it can freely do so, it would not be a stretching of the truth that we shall not be without some who will opt out on virtually all subjects -- many actually!

If the language of instruction is to be a useful tool that can be relied upon, then our children must learn it well. If one must learn or study any culture, and they say they consider doing so without learning the language that brings them closer to what they want, then they better do something else. This does not mean we are learning to to be typically English culturally.

If we can use any of our local languages for all learning, it does not matter, provided we develop it to a level where it shall address the needs and take care of us anywhere we shall be on the globe.

If we learn to use English or any foreign language because we think it is superior to our own, then we need to change our spectacles.
