1 of my bucket list places.
One has to book a day and/ night tour well in advance as a limited number is taken per day.
We enjoyed the day tour as it included a video, some theory and a drive to view the observatory.
It all seemed soo exciting.
The only negative for me was that the guides spoke fast,so it was a bit difficult to internalise everything that was said at breakneck speed
In the evenings, one should dress warmly as it gets icy cold.
As a blanket of darkness descended, billions of beautiful stars appeared.
There was a sense of timelessness standing below the hevens.
You realise how small you are in the grand scheme of creation.
It was breathtaking
I saw Jupiter, Saturn, Orians Belt,Southern Cross and the Milky Way.
Here they all were ,and I felt I could easily touch them.
Amazing evening, oh so cold.
We saw the Crators on the Moon, the dying Betelgeuse and the gases of a star being born.
Satellites whizzed by.
T Sirius,Canopus and Alpha Centuari were all there
I felt privileged at having seen this magnificence.
So so worth a visit.
Great tour from our tour guide. Have always been intrigued and was very informative.
The tour was so informative and the tour guide very knowledgable. I have seen some telescopes in my life but this 91-mirrored giant in the hill is such a great experience. The entire family enjoyed the trip and the kids enjoyed the outing so much. Well done guys!
We had a lovely afternoon tour with our guide who is a student in the field of astronomy. The tour was informative and the guide could answer most of our questions. The large telescope can only be visited during day time as it is operational at night.
The visitors center was nice however I thought that there would be more photos of the various constellations and observations made by the SALT.
There is however a night time stargazing experience presented through an 11 inch telescope at the visitors center - we didn't attend this as we had already attended one at Blesfontein where we stayed.
It is interesting that we had to drive so far to reach Sutherland and yet the little rural town had very little to offer. The information session prior to the visit to the planetarium was short and concise. The tour guide was knowledgeable and the cost was not too high. However, no provision is made for children. No activities for them at the information centre and no inclusion at the planetarium. It was sad to see little one's had their eyes glued to the screens of their phones or tabs while we were in this astronomical structure. My recommendation to the board is to appoint an educator or guide who can focus on the children. Parents do not visit the place without their children. And they should have a WOW experience at Sutherland.
