Very convenient overnight camping spot, right off the highway. Green grass areas, clean amneties. River close by. Expect some highway noise though.

My review in one sentence would be "Good enough, with a few bonuses."

To be a little more descriptive, this is one of those campsites that has all the basics, but that's it. There are showers, but the temperature is subject to change when there's another person showering. There are taps, but there was aquatic life in our dishwater. There is electricity, which is a must have really, and it is easily accessible from the N1, which is a plus. The facilities, however, are old. Know that going in.

So why four stars and not three? Simply put: the experience. What it lacks in facilities it more than makes up for in being clean and generally in good repair. It has some really, really good views of the river, where you can watch the local wildlife and not-so-wildlife from some benches and tables near the water. You can also hire a boat to paddle up and down the river, which is another bonus.

As for the management, our interaction with them has been very positive. They are very kind and friendly, and they readily assist you in finding the best stands. The rates are very reasonable for what you get as well.

My overall impression is that I would definitely have it high on my list if I'm ever passing on the N1 again, but it's not a must see or something you should go out of your way for.

Better go early, only 3 stands by the river and had to share a stand. Bit expensive to camp overnight.. a School trip was there when we went, caught 0 fish on the firs day.

River of Joy was a wonderful surprise just outside Bloemfontein and a short distance off the N1. Neat, grass campsites with a "farm-like" feel. Braai facilities at each site with a good ablution block. Dinner is available on request and was great! Would definitely stay here again.
