Was open on a Sunday. Was there by 5am to queue to renew driver's license. Offices opened by 6.45 I think. I was done with my license renewal by 8am!. Friendly and efficient staff. Arrive early with relevant docs and you will have less problems. They put people 60 years and older in front of you in the queue. The cashiers only take cash so please go with cash, driver's renewal R250 and temporary license is R90 you will need 2 black and white ID photos for temporary license and proof of address (bank statement, lights or water bill will do). They take their own photos for driver's license renewal (not temporary one) at the desk that does your finger prints and eye test. If you are reading this review in the winter month please be warned from early morning to around 7.30 it gets quite cold. Dress warm.
Been there 3 days in a row. The first day I was directed to the wrong queue and turned away. The 2nd day turned away. This morning found out I was in the wrong queue. The staff are not helpful and avoid your questions. Extremely disappointed.
Extremely long quees since their services are not available online and there is no booking system. They service a large densely populated area as well.
Their customer service is impeccable despite the heavy load of work.
Arrived there at 6:30. Cannot get any parking. Circled around and returned at 7:00. Was able to drive and get into a queue. Never knew what the queue was for and nobody was able to help. Waited in the cold during sunrise and stood there for two hours. The queue never moved. I was terribly cold and tired (I am 73 years old). So at 9:00 i left. What a service to public!
I admire how the staff cope at this centre. Currently only allowing 50 people per day at a venue that could easily process 5 or 10 times that number if fully staffed, even in batches of 10 to cope with Covid level 4 restrictions. Short staffed and constant sanitizing of seats while still patiently coping with tired frustrated members of the public attempting to drive legitimately instead of with expired licenses must be very difficult but they manage it.
For the public, be warned, it's virtually impossible to be one of the 50 in the queue during winter unless you are happy to arrive in the dark and sit outside in the cold and dark waiting for the doors to open
Been there yesterday for drivers licence renewal. Was impressed with the all the staff I encountered, including the security and car guards. Everyone was friendly and helpful. I arrived at 12pm and done by 3pm. I just made it to be the last lot let in as they closed at 2.30pm. Good covid protocol in place which is why the line moves so slowly as they only allow about 10 at a time in and wipe down after each group. I also noticed elderly people being pulled out of the line and given preference which is good.
You just need your ID, proof of residence and R250 and a pen.
Eye tests and photos are done inside by them.
My suggestion is to carry an umbrella or hat as you may have to sit outside for a while and to go earlier than 12 as you may be turned away.
I went there to renew my license, staff was not helpful or friendly at all, hand sanitizer stations were all broken
Went to book learners licence, the guy told me we must come at 3am to stand in the line.
Absolutely ridulous sit in hot sun for 4 to 5 hours only to get told you won't make it waste of time
Today I went apprehensively to collect my renewed driver's license and I was prepared for the long queues and the wait in the sun. Today the angels were watching over me as I was allowed to bypass the queues and was sent through without any queues and I was in and out in 5 minutes.
Well done to the Marianhill Driver's Licensing Authority.
Didn't wait long, picked up card.
This morning was terrible. Loads of people in the que. Stood for 4 hours until a person went in and asked for an official to please address the crowd outside. He came about half an hour later and told us that only 2 machines were working, it was taking 45 minutes to process one person. The eye testing machine was faulty so every person failed the eye test. Left feeling despondent and cold without any help. Not going back.
Very long wait, it's busy from the early morning so try get there as early as possible and not at random times. About a 2.5 hour wait in the queue even when you get there reasonably early. People are very helpful, just very disorganized.
Elderly people who cannot wait in a long line are helped immediately, which is a huge positive. Just go to the front door and they will assist you.
Dreaded the thought of going we took 4 hours to complete the drivers licence renewal. Must say the 2 security guys were very helpful and the staff inside were pleasant.
If I could give zero or negative mark I would - what a f&)@ing joke- closed Thursday and Friday at 11 due to “no water” (no idea what that has to do with anything they are tasked to deliver??? ). Called to ask yesterday and they confirmed open today 7 to 11 - just arrived and the security guard with zero interpersonal skills says CLOSED - when I ask why they said they were open, all I get is “CLOSED” - what the actual .
why not allow people to license vehicles online like most normal civilized country countries??
I think this whole department could do with an infrastructure upgrade. Unfortunately their customers are left to weather the elements be it hot or cold to point of freezing. I have to say though the staff are friendly most of the times what with it being a govt department- that’s a bonus. On my last two visits I managed to get my stuff sorted out without much glitch. You do hear the odd faffing due to frustrations which may or may not be related to the actual department business or staff. A rip off is the photographer situated outside the main building with his get rich quick scheme - someone should at least knock some manners into him and his staff. So if you are going to get your license then make sure you have 2 or 3 colour ID photos done before you get there. Studios are cheaper than their resident snapper. Also make sure your proof of residence where required is not older than 3 months or you’ll get turned away for sure. Parking is free but get their early- by that I mean 6am if you wanna brave the cold in winter.
It wasn't really that bad overall - an old lady behind some glass shouted at me because when I got in to the renewal place - there was no one to give me a form - so a very pleasant lady doing testing told me to go to the that other lady, then she said to go back and then THAT lady told me to go back - so it was a little funny - I'm sure dealing with people all day with various levels of incompetence can get to you so it was amusing. The staff are efficient and know what they're doing (mostly). I suppose they're just underpaid and overworked. I got there at 1:30pm on a Friday and I was done from beginning to end in 1hr. You can share some pens, make some friends, have a laugh or read a book while you wait. It's definitely not as bad as people make it out to be. You just need a little tolerance, patience and understanding. (At least there's air-conditioning now!)
There's a little blue standalone thing to the right of the building - it's best to get your pictures done there first.
What a bad service and treatment from the officers first of all we wake up at 4 am n he morning we wait on the long que a female officer comes at 7:45 to advice that they will delay as they holding the meeting10min late talk Indian officer opens the door request the 2nd guy in the front to come when the first one was on the side as he was tired of standingwhen the guy called the first one the officer then Rudely said ok leave it then closed and locked then the we waitingwhy treat like animals..they delayed so people had to use toilets and refreshments so now we locked outside!!!very bad and disgusting..if officers abuse us like that just because we in need of learners where do we complain?..while we still waiting I called the number and I asked what time they opening the said 9:am when I raised that on he net it written 7:45 he said they have a meeting till 9..I told him what just happened he said but to say it will be 9- 2:30how unfair can you people be?
Been this morning, got there at 6.00 so was 8th in queue .Once we started to move it only took 1 hour to complete my renewal. Despite being under staffed, we were dealt with fast , efficiently and courteously . Having read previous reports of incompetance and poor customer relations, this morning was a refreshing and positive "surprise". So it can happen! _
My views on the licensing department are conflicted as its not as terrible as home affairs in terms of efficiency and I can see that it is under funded by the government so yeah, the queues are bearable in terms of how long queues can be in and department owned by the government. The staff are strict but reasonable and if you are nice to them they are actually quite nice to you unlike at home affairs, they are just normal people trying to do their job so yeah Mixed feelings however they are extremely funny and kinda here
Get there early to renew your license make sure you have proof of address 2 id photos id book and your drivers card R250 for license fee R 100 temporary also helps if you already had you eyes tested from specsavers. Expect to que but once inside it goes fairly quickly help is there if you need any questions answered
This place is always full, so do expect to wait at least 2hours to get everything sorted.
• Opens at 07h30. Closes at 14h30.

As at November 2018
License Renewal Price & Requirements

• Copy of Proof of Residence
• 2x Printed ID Photos
Temporary License
• R90
• Requirements: Same as above
*This is for Code 08 license. Could be different for other Vehicle licences.
Should poor service. Phoned to find out if my license renewal was ready for pick up. Instead of a simple yes or no, the phone is hung up. This happened more then once
I went on the Friday after Women's Day thinking that everyone would have gone away for the long weekend and it would be empty..I wasn't the only one with that idea.
The queue had doubled on itself and went down the stairs.
The major issue, is that there is no information on what to do or where to go. The only person to ask is the security guard at the door, who I'm sure is so tired of repeating himself all day long, so he has a bit of an "attitude", naturally. They need clear signs or at least someone to guide and assist people. They only let in people to fill the top room, which is understandable, it would be very congested otherwise. Once inside there is a "treasure of a lady"(very helpful) who gives you your green form and takes you to the back room. If your licence hasn't expired, you need 1 ID photo, your proof of residence, a copy of your ID, your ID(they also accept your drivers licence) and R250. If it's expired it will be an extra R90 for a temporary drivers licence and 3 ID Photos. Getting an eye certificate from Spec Savers is a bonus. I didn't find the eye test a problem at all though, it is pretty straighforward. It just holds up the queue if someone has a problem with it ahead of you. They take your left and right thumbprint on their sensor machine, take a photo and ask you to sign. It is a pretty simple process, if they had more staff that would help it go faster. Once finished there you go to the front area and sit in a queue for the cashiers (you walked past them when you first went to the back room) BE WARNED, the cashiers are some of the most unpleasant humans I have ever encountered on this planet! Don't greet them, smile or try to be pleasant, they don't deserve it, it is wasted on them. If you ask a question they look at you like you "crawled out a piece of stinky cheese", while annoyingly chewing on their gum. The worst question to ask is "how long it will take"..if she could shoot lasers from her eyes she would! You get a form stapled to your receipt with all that information on it ,4-6 weeks written in bold.
I arrived at 9:30 and left at 3pm.
They open at 7:45 and close at 2:30pm (if you are inside before closing, they will still process you) Also, If I remember correctly they open an hour later on a Wednesday (for training)
It is obvious to see that this department, like all state departments in this country, are very low on funds. It could do with a paint, a good clean and some serious maintenance. I think this has an effect on the people working there.
Having said that, there are a few gems that work there and you are bound to meet some lovely citizens too, who will be going through the same struggle as you.
Go there with tons of patience, a good attitude,
snacks, refreshments and the expectation of spending the whole day there, then you won't be disappointed.
(A small bag of Doritos costs R10!)
Good luck!
Went to check if my licence was ready on Thursday - 18-10-2018, I had tried phoning twice.the line goes dead.
After 9 weeks and it's still not ready :(
They say it closes at 2:30pm but when i arrived at 2:00 the security says that they are closed after i entered inside. On the same day i drove to Rossburgh and they allowed me in as i was there at 2:25 just goes to show how they make there own rules especially the security guards. They act as if they are running the place.
Efficient. Organized. Competent. Most are friendly.
Roger the car guard is a fine gentleman, so be nice.
Totally, completely , and utterly appalling. They should be ashamed of themselves!

Pleasantly surprised as I expected to be there from 7 till the afternoon from all the horror stories. Makes it easier to have your complimentary eye test done @ SpecSavers & having your proof of residence, id, id size photo - 2 if you need a temp driver's, license & cash. Was out of there by 9am 🕘
I arrived at 11:25 to renew my drivers licence. And left just after 2:15pm. There was a place to sit outside. In a single line. So no jumping the queue. Then about 20 of us were ushered to room 62 for the paperwork side of things. (Green form DL) The 5 women inside were in good spirits. They were organized, friendly and explained procedures in advance. Paying was another queue, but there were 4 tellers, so it was quick and painless.
You MUST have 2 photos, 1 x proof of res, ID BOOK, ID book copy, and R250 in CASH!!!! And if you chat to those next to you, it makes the process less boring. Good luck.
Waited in queue for 3 hourswhen finally got in the cashiers queue was virtually empty Something seems amiss.. There may be some pitfalls in the proceduredefinitely need to improve on the system It seems like things went a bit backwards from previous years. Remember doing this in 1 hour in the past. Please ask your Organizational Development to do a process re-engineering .. It would help immensely.
You are obliged to renew your licence but the service is so slow and shocking that it is a major mission and a days leave to do it (if you lucky)! Jack your service!
There is no handy capped parking and NO handy capped toilets.
Also no easy access to boidings.
The public toiled are disgusting and unhealthy. I DO NOT RECOMEND YOU GO THERE.
Great service and it unbelievable because in places like this you usually get rude poeple
I believe a Customer Liaison person at the door will help eradicate much of the confusion regarding customer reason for visit, which line to follow, and which forms to fill out, whether the client has all the necessary docs etc. before even following the ques
Went this morning to do my drivers license certificate renewal.
I can say, I had a brilliant time there, do not get there when the doors open as you will sit in a queue. I arrived there at 6:00 for doors to open at 7:00 I was out by 7:30.
They are open first Saturday of every month from 7-14
Have your proof of address, Id, and a pen.
Don't be fools and try argue when you get there about not having the correct documents, or the queue is too long, plan your day expecting to wait long if you get there late.
Not bad much better than home affairs
Despite huge queues from 2 hours before opening, and inadequate facilities, these staff choose to be highly efficient throughout the day whilst creating a pleasant environment and using their great sense of humor to manage people. You inspired me to do my best tomorrow!
Brilliant people there, love survive. They are very helpful there with everything you need. Thank you.
No words to describe how disgusting the service was, terrible and arrogant staff, un-kept dirty prefab buildings and the efficiency was the worst I have ever come across. I cannot believe this is the standard that things are these days. Unacceptable. Ignorant and unpleasant staff being the biggest problem. Complaint lodged.
Absolutely slow service, 5 hours to renew drivers license. Rossburgh closed due to no water last 2 weeks. Dept. if Transport really not moving with times. They need to employ more staff and introduce better systems to deal with the crowds.
Always busy, but if you get there early you might get lucky and get finished quickly.
