Description

Equerry Photographers to the Sport of Kings have been official photographers to the National Championships of every breed of horses in South Africa, as well as to the National Championships of every discipline of equestrian sport in the country. For twenty five years Arielle and Paula were course photographers at the Bloemfontein Turf Club, and the Flamingo Park Race Track in Kimberley.

When 35mm film was the obvious choice for vast quantities of sport action photographs, producing quality colour prints for riders to view at shows was not a simple task. We enjoyed the challenge of braving sun, wind, rain and cold whilst concentrating on taking hundreds of photographs that should all have very small margins of error. The more difficult part was the sorting and cataloguing of photographs for riders to view the next day, which we achieved working through nights at strange and different accommodation establishments at shows. Our passion for horses and our fortitude, coping with film and local processors that enabled us to present photographs at shows, led us to become South Africa’s leading equine photographers. Both commissioned and show photographs of ours hang on the walls of exclusive homes from Constantia to Bryantson, and Springbok to Summerveld.

Equerry headed the queue to buy digital equipment, when this became available. With grit, we survived all the teething troubles of dealing with digital cameras and applications when the technology was in its infancy. Now we enjoy the accomplishments of photographers with in-depth knowledge of this versatile, modern medium, as well as the updated equipment to produce the best equine photographs.

In the last few decades, the Equerry team have been official photographers at the National Championships of every discipline of equestrian sport and breed shows. In years gone by Arielle and Paula were course photographers at the Bloemfontein Turf Club, and the Flamingo Park Race Track in Kimberley

When 35mm film was the obvious choice for vast quantities of sport action photographs, producing quality colour prints for riders to view was not a simple task. This could only be achieved by working late into the night, identifying horses and riders after a long day at the show knowing that the next day would be as long a day of sun, wind, rain or cold; and would require the concentration of taking hundreds more photographs that should all have very small margins of error.

Our passion for horses and our fortitude, coping with film and local processors that enabled us to present photographs at shows, led us to become South Africa’s leading equine photographers. Our pictures of the eighties and nineties hang on the walls of exclusive homes from Constantia to Bryantson, and Springbok to Summerveld.

The queue to buy digital equipment, when this became available was, no doubt, headed by Equerry. With grit, we survived all the teething troubles of dealing with digital cameras and applications when the technology was in its infancy. Now we enjoy the accomplishments of photographers with in depth knowledge of this versatile, modern medium, as well as the updated equipment to produce the best!

We are privileged to welcome Colin Dolling as a member of our Equerry Team. His knowledge of photography and passion to take outstanding photographs of horses make him invaluable to our team.
