We feel the same way, @SHSU. Celebrate graduates without glitter confetti. Please don't release balloons, hang on tight 🎈as these items have a negative impact on wildlife and the environment. Help us keep the forest free of these items. Congratulations class of 2019! 👩‍🎓🎓👨‍🎓

SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: FOCUS ON FLORA AND FAUNA

Celebrating #Endangered Species #Awareness by highlighting Texas A&M Forest Service Jones State Forest’s own Red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW) population. Recognized by the American Bird Conservancy as one of the world’s most urbanized populations.

Jones State Forest is one of the nation’s largest managed urban forests but the 1700 acres limits the RCW family group numbers to about 10 to 12. Also due to the surrounding developed land..., the forest has over 50,000 neighbors within 1/2 mile radius.

Help bring awareness to #HealthyTreesHealthyLives by better understanding the benefits of #forest management and what a forest can do for you and the world.

One of WARNER’S FAVORITE springtime flowers is new to the Wildscape Gardens at Texas A&M Forest Service Jones State Forest this year.

Standing cypress (Ipomopsis rubra) is a flowering plant of the phlox family native to North America from the state of Texas to the province of Ontario, commonly known as standing cypress, scarlet gilia, Texas plume, flame flower, and indian spur.

This flower is noteworthy for its bright, upturned flowers.

    ...

A pollinator MUST HAVE. These plants grew from seed cast into the soil in winter 2018. The seeds were part of a project funded by NEEF that John Warner and volunteers called “Connecting Communities, people, places and pollinators”. Over 50 pounds of native wildflower seed mixes were provided through educational programs and outreach.

Texas A&M Forest Service W. Goodrich JONES STATE FOREST-where the classroom meets real world application of knowledge and skills

Nearly for a quarter of a century, Conroe ISD Academy of Science & Technology has had 9th grade students conduct team science-based research projects and statistical analysis focused on aquatics, soil, insects, forest, air and more.

These young scientists then present their findings at the Jones Star Forest Environmental Profile Symposium.

Several of our Heartwood Chapter Texas Master Naturalist intern friends completed the Texas Aquatic Science curriculum training at Sheldon Lake State Park yesterday. We had fun wading in the ponds to collect macroinvertebrates. We found grass shrimp, crayfish, tadpoles, midge larvae, dragonfly nymphs, and more. The aquatic science curriculum is used for teaching middle school and high school students. These trained volunteers can now help educators and students alike. Did you know that trees and forests clean and filter our water supply? 🦐🦞🌳🌊💦 #HealthyTreesHealthyLives Heartwood Chapter, Texas Master Naturalist, Sheldon Lake State Park & Environmental Learning Center Montgomery County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension
