And here is what all the students said about the Denmark Sociology class, the last in a series of student-authored blog posts.
Here is an essay Professor Janning wrote about issues raised when bringing digital visitors into three of her 2018-19 classes.
Congrats to Whitman Sociology alum Christine Liebbrand, who received her PhD in Sociology at the University of Washington. She will be teaching courses there next year. Congrats Dr. Leibbrand!
Tonight in Chicago Professor Helen Kim!
Congrats on funding for new research for sociologist Ranita Ray, who was a guest video lecturer this year in Principles of Sociology at Whitman.
And just like that, this once in a life-time experience has come to an end. Thank you so much to Michelle Janning for making this trip possible! She has worked so incredibly hard organizing us students as well as setting up many different events and guest lectures. We all cannot thank her enough as she has graced us with these many wonderful memories that we will never forget. Thank you also to Jennifer Duncan-Bendix for being our wonderful co-teacher and helping us every ste...p of the way. For the last week of this Crossroads course, we went to Sjaelsmark (a deportation center), Bjorn’s international school where Michelle’s son, Aaron, went to school for part of 3rd grade, heard a guest lecture from Annie Brøndum (pedagogue for high school), Nina Monrad (gymnasium teacher), and Mette Sørenson (mid-wife). And finally, on Friday, we ended with presenting our individual projects which included the use of interviews and field notes. Thank you all for reading about our wonderful experiences and for letting me share them with you on this page. And with that, I’d like to say tak and hej hej!
See MoreSecond week in Denmark is in the books! This week, we took a three-day trip to Kolding where we visited Nicolai for børn (a building specifically designated for children’s activity and creative power), Koldinghus (a beautiful royal castle), the LEGO House, Sanseslottet (a children’s preschool) and finally, Kolding Gymnasium (a high school). We are now back in Copenhagen where many of us are visiting Tivoli (an amusement park which inspired Walt Disney to build Disney Land) and other attractions nearby. We cannot wait what lies ahead for our last week in Denmark!
Blog posts from students in the Crossroads Denmark class as they settled into family life, sleepiness, food, and transportation.
Congratulations to Professor Keith Farrington, who just became a grandfather to a healthy baby grandson. Yay!
What a wonderful first week in Denmark! Some of the highlights included the scavenger hunt in Copenhagen where we looked at different childhood stores and practiced taking field notes, our trip to Frederiksberg with Jennifer Duncan-Bendix, listening to guest speaker, Professor Louise Barkhuus, discuss the issues with families and technology at IT University of Copenhagen, and today, seeing The Little Mermaid statue and exploring the DAC (Danish Architecture Centre). Next week, many students will begin to solidify their topic and take field notes about a specific aspect of childhood in Scandinavia. More updates coming soon!

2019 Senior Sociology and Sociology-Environmental Studies Tribute
The year is at an end And it’s time for goodbyes. Our seniors are so wonderful,... And now somewhat more wise.
Meg’s research is so meta it gave us all food for thought, And Nate tells how second homes and their meanings are fraught. Biri wrestles with identities LatinX As Juliana tells of citizenship stories today deemed complex. Jessie’s mangrove forests tell us stories of sustainability, And Ye Rim delves into race and college social movement activity. Skye knows the most about the Marshall Islands And Maeve helps unpack complexities of campus violence. Renee helps us see the variation in rural identity, As Janssie studies rural lives that migrate to the city. Alex’s look at Denver gentrification seems right While Cedric’s off playing, I mean studying, Fortnite. Mayra’s got dibs on watching Coco, While Kaelie R. tells us what police dogs may know. Marlyn has a focus on law and mental health, And Lucy has us wondering whether nature’s just about wealth. Maddie and her bike are moving off the trail, While Kaeley P. blasts the plastic that endangers the whale. Cyrilla wonders what matters years after the NICU And Jackie studies parents and their silence about #MeToo. Gabbie’s got her focus on the Tumblr witches, While Anna’s humor deconstruction has sociologists in stitches.
What a splendid group of seniors Ready for life’s sparks The Soc Faculty wish them all the best Along with Weber, Durkheim, and Marx.
