Amit Chakrabarty, MD, MS, FRCS, FICS
Dr. Amit Chakrabarty practices adult and pediatric urology at the Urologic Clinics of North Alabama (www.ucna.com). He holds professional responsibilities as Director of Comprehensive Continence Center and Center for Female Pelvic Health of North Alabama. His main office is in Huntsville Alabama and has a satellite office in Madison, Alabama. He is holds license to practice medicine in Alabama since 1995, Indiana since 2003 and Georgia and Tennessee since 2013.
Dr. Chakrabarty is a Board certified urologist who received his medical degree with honors from MKCG Medical College in Berhampur, India in 1980, and his Master of Surgery degree from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. He did a fellowship in Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 1987. He completed his residency in Urology and fellowship in Uro-Oncology (Research) at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in 1995.
Dr. Chakrabarty is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland and the International College of Surgeons. He is an active member of the American Urological Association (www.auanet.org), in addition to various memberships of societies related to his specialty.
Though his practice encompasses all branches of Urology, one of his main areas of interest is in the field of female urology including urinary incontinence and pelvic floor prolapse and minimally invasive therapies for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). He is an active member and contributor of International Continence Society (ICS), Society of Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU), International Uro-Gynecologist Association (IUGA) and National Association for Continence (NAFC),
He has several publications, presentations and posters, mostly in the field of male and female urinary incontinence and pelvic floor prolapse at the national and international meetings and journals. He is a national and international surgical proctor for male and female urinary incontinence and pelvic floor prolapse. He is an invited speaker for urology topics of interest for CME and non CME forums. Dr. Chakrabarty is an adjunct faculty for University of Alabama, Huntsville Campus, and offers urology rotation for family practice residency training.
He is a speaker and surgical proctor for American Medical Systems (for male incontinence, female incontinence and pelvic floor repair and BPH -Greenlight Laser), Boston Scientific (Female incontinence and pelvic floor repair products), Cook Urological (Biodesign Absorbable mesh), BARD (Ajust Sling), Medtronics (Interstim neuromodulation therapy), Urologix (Cooled Thermotherapy – Prostate Microwave Therapy and Prostiva -TransUrethral Needle Ablation or TUNA) and Slate Pharmaceuticals (Testopel). He has been a speaker for various pharmaceutical companies and at present speaks for Warner-Chilcot pharmaceuticals.
He has been a primary investigator for various pharmaceutical agents and, as a primary investigator for Longwood Research and Accelovance research, still continues his research interests. His present research interests include treatment for urinary incontinence and pelvic floor prolapse. He is a consultant for many investment research firms and serves as expert defense witness for legal entities. He is in the Physician Advisory Board for the Capson Physicians Insurance.
He is a pioneer in the state for newer modalities of treatment for urinary incontinence being the first in North Alabama to offer interstim therapy (Medtronic) and in-office Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (Urgent PC) for intractable Overactive bladder symptoms, Advance Male Sling for male urinary incontinence and minimally invasive therapies for BPH with Cooled Thermotherapy and Transurethral Needle Ablation of the prostate (Urologix), and Greenlight XPS laser vaporization of the prostate (American Medical Systems).
His non academic administrative leadership roles include Active Counselor Fifth district of Medical Association of State of Alabama and Member of Board of Trustees of the Madison County Medical society. Additionally, he is a member of the Physician Leadership Group at Crestwood Hospital and is the President of the Medical Executive Committee of the Decatur Ambulatory Surgery Center. He is the president of Alabama Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, president of the Society of Indian American Clinical Urologists (www.siacunet.org) and past president of Indian American Urological Association (www.iauanet.org). He is the immediate past Chairman of the Ethics and grievances Committee of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (www.aapiusa.org), the largest ethnic organization in this country.
Dr. Charkabarty’s recent accomplishments include a publication in a peer reviewed journal of a paper on PC coating of Elevate mesh as the lead author. This is the only publication on Elevate PC based on which the product has been launched worldwide. He is currently the primary investigator of two phase 4 studies involving Botox in overactive bladder and one FDA required 522 study on mesh in pelvic floor repair.
His abstract titled “Mesh Augmented Posterior Vaginal Prolapse Repair – A Curse or a Cure” is accepted for presentation at the Society of Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU) in March 2014. He was a faculty for an International Uro-Gynecological workshop in Cuttack, India in January 2014. He was an invited faculty at the International Continence Society meeting at Barcelona, Spain in August of 2013 where he addressed spoke on Biological Materials in Female Pelvic Floor Reconstruction. What's New? In May 2013 two professors of urology from Tokyo University, Japan visited Huntsville, Alabama to observe a new technique for Pelvic Floor repair performed by Dr. Chakrabarty. In September of 2012 he chaired a session on BPH treatment option at the Society Internatioanale de Urologie meeting at Fukuoka, Japan.
In his personal life Dr. Chakrabarty is married to his wife for 27 years and has three daughters. Time permitting he enjoys outdoor cooking, performing musical shows, watching football and Cricket and playing golf.
