Urban Ark Conservation is a Veteran operated 501(c)3 organization. Our mission is to educate conservation through the practices of sustainability. Through the reduction of your carbon footprint you are not only protecting and preserving the environment, you are protecting natural habitats and ecosystems. Project: Homestead is Urban Ark Conservation's way to educate the community, through workshops, outreach, and giving, about the practices of sustainability and its great impact on the surrounding world. From food miles, alternate sources of energy, and sustainable aquaponics, we can teach how homesteading can be done in any area, by anyone. Homesteading can be done in rural areas, or inner cities. Producing for yourself ensures that you and your family are eating organic, pesticide free, non GMO foods, and you are doing it in the best environmentally friendly way. Through a farming technique called aquaponics, you can produce fresh protein, vegetables, and fruits in your home or in a greenhouse, year round in any climate. WIth Project: Homestead, we plan to construct a greenhouse which will house a large aquaponics system and be operated by solar energy, and heated through geothermal means. Aquaponics uses 90% less water than traditional farming, yields more produce, and has zero runoff. There are no chemical pesticides, or additives to the system. The result is 100% organic food for the community. The greenhouse will also be utilized as an education center, teaching students, veterans, and members of the community a sustainable skill. The food grown here will be sent to community kitchens and food pantries in the area to be served and distributed to those who need it most. Proceeds from Project: Homestead will be used in our other projects which include the propagation of endangered breeds of livestock, and the protection of endangered species of herpetofauna. These other projects are vital to the protection and sustainability of a green future.
