Science Sunday: “if you are playing a piece on the piano, your brain needs to keep track of which larger musical phrase, which bar and which exact note you are currently at. So, you need a kind of mental addressing system. It is this addressing system that we discovered with our EEG methods.”

The human heart is a marvel of biological engineering, but it’s not without its imperfections. One-third of the population has a little-known, minor heart condition, a tiny hole known as a patent foramen ovale or PFO. Professor of Human Physiology Andrew Lovering will discuss the research around this defect at the next Quack Chats pub talk, titled “The ‘Hole’ Story of Cardiovascular Physiology & Medicine." The event is free and open to the public. Food and drink are available for purchase.

Science Sunday: Three years ago, physicists for the first time detected gravitational waves from a collision of black holes in deep space — a discovery that was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics.

Now gravitational waves are so commonly detected, scientists — including 11 UO co-authors — are releasing entire catalogs of them.

Good luck to No. 15 Oregon Volleyball as it takes on No. 2 Minnesota at 1:30 p.m. today in Minneapolis in the NCAA Regionals (streaming on ESPN3). The Ducks upset the Golden Gophers in September and hope to repeat the feat in today's Sweet 16 match.
