I make heirloom quality traditional furniture from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries including chests of drawers, chairs, tables, Pilgrim chests, jewelry boxes, etc. I use both machine and hand tools. The majority of the work on my pieces is done at my self-made workbench, with hand tools.
Heirloom furniture requires the use of dovetails as well as mortise and tenon joinery, with turning, banding, carving, and inlay all done by hand. This type of workmanship not only creates a piece that will last for many lifetimes, but a piece that is also unique. It cannot be duplicated or commercially manufactured.
The entire process of creating traditional furniture draws from the skills of furniture builders of old, from a time when attention to detail and fine craftsmanship were necessary in creating pieces that would not have to be replaced and could be used for many, many years. Heirloom means “treasure”, and that’s what it’s all about: creating a piece that you and your family can treasure and pass on to future generations.
