Trying to tie a few more people to tied nature, for those that don't get out, can't get out, or can never get enough!.
While we watched this scene unfold there were all kind of questions as to why this cow bison did not assist her calf while they were crossing the river. My response was one that I heard a few times from George Bumann last week. "We have not been able to properly interview the bison yet".
One cool experience from todays wildlife tour was this trumpeter swan chasing a Canada goose. Do you have any guesses as to why the a swan would chase a goose? If I were to guess I would say the trumpeter swan was trying to protect a nesting territory.
It is trail camera Tuesday! I saw that some of the guides over at @BrushBuck Wildlife Tours, Inc. have already seen a moose calf in the Tetons. That sighting has inspired me to post a video of a moose calf I caught on my trail camera last year. (If you are visiting Jackson and looking for a tour you should give Brushbuck a call.)
Changing of the guard, watch as these sandhill cranes swap places on their nest. The male starts off on the nest and then the female comes in rotates the eggs and then starts her turn incubating them. I posted a video earlier on how to tell which one is the male and which is the female. If you do not know which is the male and female first look at size, males are bigger. If that does not help watch them when they call, the males head will go more vertical and will only have one call to every two of the females. Watch closely, before they exchange takes place you can see the females (bird on the right) head bob twice while the males (bird on the left) head bobs only once. This was another video from an encounter we had during the Intelligence of Animals course through Yellowstone Forever. (Sorry for the shaky video and extra noise. This video is handheld with my phone through a scope during strong winds and rain.)
I wanted to share this neat behavior that our Intelligence of Animals class witnessed. With out knowing what is going on it just looks like a bunch of bison wandering through. With adding a little more to the story you can have a better understanding of what you are seeing. On the right 1/3 of the video there are the remains of a dead bison. It is believed that bison will have a funeral of sorts for dead bison. Watch closely it is as if they come in and pay their respects for the one that is dead. Some of the things to notice is how they act, why are so many tails raised, why do they gather around the dead bison, these are all behaviors you typically don’t see in a in this type of setting. Thanks to George Bumann for a great class, take a look at and follow A Yellowstone Life to follow George and his families adventures in Yellowstone. Yellowstone Forever
It is getting hard for me to see new species inside of Yellowstone, but these bull snakes were a first for me. After a little reading I am assuming one is the male and the other is the female, I believe the darker of the two is the male. It sounds like the males usually wait for the females to come out of hibernation and the breeding takes place in the spring. If you know more about these snakes than me feel free to share what you know.
This is why you get up early, our animal behavior class was on the road by 5am this morning. It was awesome to see this wolf but the behavior of these sandhill cranes with the wolf so close was a lot more interesting to watch.
I wanted to share this short video I took of a couple sandhill Cranes in Yellowstone. Although the video is not the best qualtiy you can hear their calls and see their head movment.
Can you tell which one is the female?
Watch for the crane that throws its head further back. The males head rises furher than the females then the female has two call notes for everyone of the males.
Spring babies is what makes May and June a great time to visit Yellowstone. This is also the most exciting time for me I have the freedom to travel through Yellowstone without the restrictions that are present during the winter. #yellowstoneforever #bearsofinstagram #tiedtonature #nikonusa #adambrubakerphoto #gettinout #guidelife #grizzlybear #bear #nature #naturesbest #wildlife #wild #wildlifephotography #splendid_animals #yellowstonecountry #bearcubs #yellowstonenps #yellowstone #wildlife.hd #bears.for.you
Spent quite a few hours patiently waiting for these little cubs to come out today.
Remember when you are in Yellowstone the guy that stops his car in the road to take a quick photo is not really a jerk. He has probably just saved up enough money to come on his dream vacation and had always wanted to see a bear because he grew up on Yogi the Bear. All of a sudden there is a bear right off the road and he cant believe his luck. All he can think about is getting a quick photo before this bear leaves. Give him a break, and then politely ask him to find a parking spot and come watch it with you. Thanks.
Liking and sharing my images is always welcomed and appreciated.
(Take a look in the comments to see a photo with all three cubs together).
12 bears, 3 wolves, and the worlds largest geyser (and bison, elk, sheep, and pronghorn). That is going to be hard to beat, but I think I am up to the challenge.
It was my first tour of the season today. I was with a nice couple and we had a relaxing day. We watched Old Faithful, walked around some hot springs and as we drove the animals came. Two grizzlies, a wolf, coyote, fox, bison, elk, and this black bear which may have been the prettiest bear I have seen.
I was not expecting to see a bear on this trail camera yet, to my surprise one showed up. If you look closely at this bears front paws you will notice the green. I did not get a video of this bear doing it but last year I had a bear scoopong the green algae from the water and eating it. I suspect this bear was doing the same thing.
Would anyone like to have information about tours to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks starting from Island Park or West Yellowstone? I just received more business cards, rack cards, and postcard magnets. I can also share PDF or JPG files if anyone is looking to place something on the internet. Please share this with others that might be interested. Thank you.
Just got back from checking my trail camrea with two of my boys. If you want a way to get out a little, get a trail camera. Anybody have one out and getting any good photos? Post them here.
Before this bear swam across the lake he stopped just off the shore to play for a minute.
