Mahalo to The Queen's Medical Center - West O'ahu employees who gave the gift of life and donated blood today to help the Blood Bank of Hawaii in their "Are You Tough Enough" challenge. Hawaii needs more than 200 donors a day and summer is traditionally a slow period for blood donations. Every bit helps!

Careers at Queen’s: Acute Care Nurse, featuring Flo Agos, MS, BSN, RN

Flo Agos will soon embark on a new phase in her career as she takes on the role of Manager, Physician Practice, at The Queen's Medical Center - West O'ahu. Currently the nurse manager at the Orthopedic and Spine Center at The Queen's Medical Center – Punchbowl, Flo has been proving for years how far a one-time nursing assistant can go and how many doors can open for you when you’re a member of the Queen’s t...eam.

“Queen’s offers a lot of opportunities as far as professional growth. We’re very rich in resources. If you want to change practice, they offer evidence-based classes. They offer research courses. They provide paid professional leave, so you can go to conferences to build your skills and knowledge in specialties,” she said.

Nursing is a second career for Flo, who was working in the tourism industry when her beloved grandmother encouraged her to go back to school.

“I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for her believing in me. I went to nursing school and I came to Queen’s fresh out of me taking my boards because my values aligned with the mission and vision of the organization. Queen’s was offering new grad programs, so that was my foot in the door,” she said.

But not even her grandmother could have guessed where Flo would take her career. In 2012, after working in orthopedics for 10 years, she was awarded a management position and the opportunity to open a new medical-surgical unit from the ground up.

“Kamehameha 3 at that time was our last wing space, so they asked me if I wanted to manage that unit. I opened up that unit as a clinical operations manager, and then became the orthopedic and spine manager in 2014. Since then, I’ve been looking for more opportunities to grow,” she said.

She hopes her journey and career success will inspire other RNs to join Queen’s, a nationally-recognized health care organization and the only hospital in Hawaii to achieve Magnet status with the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

“We’ve expanded our reach as far as providing services. We’re growing in ambulatory care. There’s a lot of opportunity at our organization. I think our founders, the King and the Queen, would be very proud. Truly, health care is where I belong. I enjoy the work that I do every day,” Flo said.

The award honors our commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines.

But when we work together as a team to provide a definitive treatment in a timely manner, we see miracles. We see our patients regain full brain function and go back home to their loved ones. This award demonstrates our commitment and dedication to provide the highest quality of acute stroke care at The Queen’s Medical Center based on nationally-respected clinical guidelines,” said Kazuma Nakagawa, MD, Medical Director of Queen’s Comprehensive Stroke Center.
