When you want to portray your subjects as powerful, find ways to get lower than eye level. These island horses stand at only 13 hands high. But when photographed down low, they become larger than life.
Though we may have just past the official designation of Spring on the calendar, out here on the islands off the coast of North Carolina, the return of ospreys are the true harbinger of the season.
This guy was found eating fresh sashimi on a stump rising up at the edge of the ocean. The ocean is not the natural habitat of stumps of course, but these barrier islands migrate westward in response to sea level rise and big storms. The islands are literally being rolled overtop of themselves when the ocean overwashes. Locals call this vast tract of ocean forest Washwoods, and it is the remnants of an old maritime forest that once stood on the backside of the island some 300 years ago. As the sand buried the forest, and the island continued to migrate westward, the remnants of that old forest is now exposed and rising out of the beach and surf - making a perfect dining location for ospreys who have freshly returned from the tropics.
