The Cheese Shop is one of our family's go to lunch stops. Always amazingly good. Their House Dressing is a must with bread ends to take home as well. We live here & ha e to be careful to spread our visits out because they're so good.
This place is usually busy but it's for a good reason. The sandwiches are good and there's a large variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to choose from as well as sides, from chips to deli salads. You can call your order ahead but you will have a line to wait in to check out too.
We love this place. Go there multiple times whenever in Williamsburg. The sandwiches are great, and a select strong beer from the wine store downstairs goes perfectly with lunch. It has become tradition for us. It helps to avoid the busy times of day because the crowds can get large.
Consistently the best stop while in Williamsburg. Great sandwiches, specialty good and an even better wine selection. Grab a Cheese plate which are made from a huge selection, then grab a bottle of wine and sit outside for an afternoon in style. I'm very surprised by the negative reviews about rude employees, bad food and the like. I've been coming here for 15 years and have never experienced anything close to what some of these reviewers claim happened. I would guess it was more a case of very difficult, persnickety people on vacation...who decided to leave their decency at home. Don't believe their false claims, this is a must stop... Especially if you were a wine aficionado. By far the best wine selection in town.
My husband and two daughters went to The Cheese Shop for lunch. It was very busy but the sign said 10 min wait. Fair enough. I ordered 2 Virginia Ham sandwiches with their house mayo and waited patiently like everyone else. I dawned on me when I finally noticed 4 people order AND receive their sandwiches that something wasn't right. After talking to someone they came back and they couldn't find my order. At that point I had waited 30 min. They said they would make the sandwiches right away which they did. I asked to speak to a manager about a discount (at that point I've been waiting 40 min). When she came out she offered a 10% discount which is a joke. I had to ask again before she decided to take the price of one sandwich off. I'm rarely this disappointed in a restaurant experience because we usually research our choices well before making a decision. I would have said if the sandwich blew us away I would have let it slide... but... it was awful. There was so much mayonnaise that the nice fresh bread was super soggy and the meat was disgustingly salty. For a $10 sandwich, I expected more. Way more.
Went there for lunch on a Sunday late morning. We beat the crowds but only by 30 minutes. When getting ready to leave, the crowds were definitely building. Sandwiches were delicious, just a little crowded, no indoor seating. Will be back though!
The sandwiches are made from quality ingredients and the service is always friendly. Nice outdoor seating area. If you come at peak hours, expect to wait, but it's worth it. Call ahead for pick-up if you are in a hurry.
The cheese shop seemed nice. But the downstairs wine shop proprietor was nothing but rude. He asked if he could help us. We said we didn't know much about wine. He said "Well then why are you in a wine shop?" And walked away. Wow! Really!? As it happens we have money and my wife likes wine. A little help with a selection would have been nice. Instead we were insulted.
Love this place! Always shop here when I visit Williamsburg! I'm in love with their tea selection my favorite is the Royal Palace Tea in the collectors tin! Food is always great!
UPDATE: beware orders placed via the tablets. We waited close to an hour after placing our order (it was especially busy) only to find out it had been lost. The staff immediately made our order and offered free sandeiches in the future.
Good location. Tends to get extremely busy at lunch. You should follow the advice of Alexandra M. and call ahead to avoid the line.
We went on a Saturday and I'm not sure if it's better on the weekdays but it was packed. When we put our order in it was a 20 min wait. We had never been there so when we got to the front to order. It was very much what bread, what meat, mayo or mustard. Kinda short with us and I understand it was busy. I just found it unfair that my boyfriend ended up with sprouts and roasted tomato, because she chatted slightly more with him while hurrying me along
We looked around at all the goodies while trying not to get shoved in different directions due to so many people standing around just waiting. When we walked back to that direction the wait time moved from 20 to 45.
I'm guessing we waited about 20-25 so close to the timing told to us so I can't complain.
The subs/sandwiches were tasty but nothing special with the exception of the bread. I loved the Italian bread slices (toasted ) it was like a Texas toast sandwich. Though think local sub shop and expect small portions
Their cheese cake is delicious and I would suggest purchasing it to share.
Sometimes I just crave one of their sandwiches! They make delicious handcrafted sandwiches. They have wonderful prepackaged picnic items for a quick meal to take on the go too. Great deli chips and soda selection too. Not to be missed!
Trendy spot for a wide variety of sandwiches and sides right in the middle of downtown Williamsburg. Highly recommended for travelers. Is within a large shop with all sorts of snacks and cheese. You order your food at a kiosk and then can walk around the shop while they make it. Expect it to be busy on a weekend. It is worth it though and is a fun place to be while you wait.
