When TDLR inspector Shawn Oneal performed a barber shop inspection last week, he hadn’t expected to be inspired in the process. When he entered the Bear Creek Barber Shop in Houston, he immediately noticed the smell of fresh paint. When he asked owner Hue Thi Pham if she had remodeled the shop, she explained that her shop – and the entire strip mall -- had been destroyed during Hurricane Harvey. The strip mall was under 6 to 10 feet of water after the storm, and Ms. Pham lost everything -- except for her barber shop permit. The shop permit was badly stained, but she saved it with the hopes of one day reopening the shop. After being out of work for the past year, Ms. Pham finally was able to reopen her shop two weeks ago and is starting from scratch to re-establish her business. #Harvey
“Austin has lost a giant in the barbering community, Mr. Roosevelt Stewart. His contributions to the Austin community made him the Dean of Austin Barbering. He will be missed.” – Brian Francis, TDLR Executive Director
Last Sunday TDLR attended “Pamper Me Pretty – A Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer Survivors Awareness Brunch” hosted by Her New Image, Inc. and Houston Training Schools Gessner Campus. Students and instructors performed complimentary hair styling, makeovers, manicures and more for survivors. Thanks for including us in this wonderful event!
