I've been a member now for approximately 8 months and pay approximately $75 a month on the current contract. The facility it appears will be closing in late December as the location will be demolished and rebuilt in the future for retail. I've noted many of the original staff have left both front desk and fitness, trainers, and rehab employees/contract. This would seem to support the information I'm hearing. I use the facility in the mornings thru early afternoons 4-5 times a week. I usually utilize the pool which is small and is good enough for laps without a kick-turn. The sauna and steam rooms are usually available and uncrowded. The men's locker room is adequate and the staff and cleaning crew do a good job to keep it fairly clean and stocked with towels and soapKeep in mind that this facility is old. The weight room is very good, lots of choices and is usually not crowded. Aerobic equipment is always available and is routinely cleaned by staff not users. On a more negative note;. Follow through by staff when you want to arrange swim lessons is poor and probably translates to other areas. Pool staff are just there, not engaging nor friendly. The Pilates staff are very good and very well trained. Classes or individual instruction is available. Overall a 3 star rating with some 4-5 star components. See you there?
I have taken many classes over the past 37 years and only few trainers or instructors do I remember or thoroughly enjoy. Although I do not frequent the gym often anymore I keep my membership mostly to have access to the dance classes instructed by Jean Barth. I love his music and mostly his energy. He makes the steps easy for beginners to keep up yet energetic enough for more advanced. He always has a welcome smile or a high five for everyone!! In my book he's a keeper and I would follow him anywhere.
Very friendly social atmosphere! The staff here is amazing they are very dedicated and passionate to help members and guests feel comfortable and welcome .The personal trainers here are the best they are determined and take pride in their work to help you succeed in accomplishing your fitness goals .The group fitness classes here are also top notch it's a guarantee that you will get a workout that get your heart pumping. Overall the facilities have everything you need indoor track, indoor swimming pool, etc.
I have worked as a trainer since 1986 both as an independent and for other companies. I have never worked with a better team of trainers than I have at Tenley Sport And Health. I am not exaggerating when I write that I am made better by my colleagues and I trust they feel the same. Our equipment is well maintained, the managers always make sure we have everything we need to effectively serve, and they always make the members first. Our motto is "We Improve Lives" and I honestly believe we accomplish that goal. We take your health and fitness seriously; this is not our jobit's our passion.
Tenley Sport and Health provides a fantastic fitness experience every time. In addition to having great amenities, such as their their pool and spa, they have a knowledgeable and friendly staff that make each visit special. I would highly recommend their services.
Not so friendly front desk :-(
I was on a stationary bike, and the man on the bike 2 over from me starting coughing and hacking, bringing up phlegm and so on. I asked him if he could cover his mouth while coughing. He just looked at me and said, "Am I coughing? I'm not aware of it." And he went on pedaling. I tried to find a trainer to speak to him, but there weren't any on the main floor that I could find, so I left the gym, earlier than I'd wanted to but I don't want somebody else's phlegm in the air I'm breathing. (There aren't many stationary bikes in that area, so I couldn't move very far away.) If people are acting in an unhealthy manner, there ought to be somebody we could appeal to -- I told the guy at the front desk, but obviously he has a job to do and couldn't leave it. Gym needs more attention to basic health conditions.
Decent equipment wasted on an awful group of people. This is the kind of place where two faced people will actively kick a man while he is down. I could talk for hours about the many ways that these toxic people treat each other but I'll just leave it to one small example. At nearly every hour you will find unathletic trainers in official "sport and health" shirts ordering people in their late 80's to throw balls against the wall making a ton of annoying noise until they collapse from their pointless exertion where they would then limp off unrewarded out the door.
I wish I could rate it a negative 15. I must say, I am quite disappointed in what Tenley Sport & Health has degraded into. I was a member many years ago. Within the last few years, I re-joined. However, as others have noted, the lack of integrity - regarding their business practices - and the result of that slimy behavior, is nothing short of abusive. My experience was very similar to the last posters. A few moments ago, they reamed me for nearly $500, as a result of extremely shady shenanigans. What an incredible waste of what was once a fine facility. STEER CLEAR!!!
***The comment is copied from my yelp. I just want to warn more people about the unethical business practice***
To be fair, this gym has nice facility and not that crowded (I tried to work out on 5pm, 7pm, and 9pm and I don't need to wait long for a press bench or bar bell). It is a good deal when you pay only 39.99 a month.
HOWEVER, HOWEVER, I'm deeply frustrated, disappointed and concerned with the practice of the salesman/advisor and thus I doubt the integrity of the business. I would rated it a five star until yesterday when I found out that I became a victim of a scam.
The main issue is that the salesman deliberately misled me when I signed the agreement last year.
1. I was promised by the advisor that I don't need to pay the last two month of my 12-month membership because I have told him I would move to a different job location in 10 month and he expressed understanding and let me know that I don't need to pay the last two month. However, I found out that I got billed for the last two months
2. More seriously, I was never told that the membership will continue after 12-month period, which I signed for. And they never send notice to you such as "your membership will be automatically renewed if you don't opt out". So in the end I am billed for 5 month membership fee plus service fee even if I haven't been to the gym since May. (May, June, July, August and September per the cancellation policy). I never received a call regarding the issue.
Well, of course, I was told that the agreement signed states so, even if I was told completely different story by the advisor. Lessons learned, DO NOT sign the agreement unless you read every single word no matter how small it is. Don't believe what the advisor said. Anything he promised, make him write in on paper. You'd better record your conversation with him!
Remember to mark in your calendar that you need to cancel your membership before the 11th month if you are looking for a one year membership only.
I'm going to contact the general manager to see if they have the integrity to correct the miss behavior of the advisor and waive the unfair bill. I will keep my posting updated.
My anger just reminded my of another incident - when I forgot the clothes at the gym, usually I can get them the next day. However, when one day I forgot my suit and $300 Ermenegildo Zegna belt, I was only able to get back the suit and the belt was lost. I wrote an email to the management and never heard back. I don't know if it was stolen by any customer or staff.
