This place is so underrated. The food is amazing, and the prices are really reasonable. This is a place I would take grandparents and extended family for a get together, and there's something delicious for everyone, whether you're vegan, gluten free, or neither. They have a fun selection of Ethiopian beer and wine as well.
Great food, and service with a smile. I really like the staff here—in fact they saved me! I lost my wallet over the weekend and out of the blue I got a text message from the staff about it. They even offered to deliver it to my office!
Good variety in menu choices, but service is a bit slow even when it isn't busy.
Authentic and highly flavorful. Portions were big. Attentive service.
Do NOT order takeout from here, particularly during busy times. My boyfriend and I ordered food for pick up for our anniversary at 7 PM on a Saturday before a movie at 8:30. We used Grubhub to complete this order. They then texted us indicating that our food would be ready at 7:45. When we went to get our food, the waiter told us it was being prepared. Fast forward an hour- we were still there, waiting for our food. Our mistake was continuing to wait rather than asking for a refund. The waiter tried to check in on us, but was also busy with other guests. We were told when our food was finally ready that the place's orders had been backed up, while we had been under the impression that our food was already prepared at 7:30. No explanation or apologies other than that was given. We missed our movie and will not be ordering from here anytime soon.
Too expensive for what you get. It just needs improvement in all areas starting from the food and the service was slow because there was only one waiter for the whole place 😥😥😥
The atmosphere is dead, the food is mediocre. It is also very oily and salty. Not as spicy as I would have appreciated.
Visited here only once with 3 family members. We shared a large platter of samples of all their vegetarian dishes (a lot of them are lentil-based with different spices) served on the special Etheopian flatbread (I forget the name of it). This was recommended to us by the only server on staff that evening, as he said it would serve 4 people. It turned out to be filling enough. I thought those vegetarian dishes that were supposed to be served warm/hot (some are salad-type dishes) were tepid temperature-wise. The bread is very spongy and soft and you break off pieces and scoop up a bit of the individual veggie and/or meat-based dishes with it. You eat with your hands here, although you can request silverware if that's not your thing, but you'll look kind of weird. You can request extra bread if needed. We did receive an extra bread on the house, which was nice. We also sampled their vegetarian Etheopian samosas, which were filled with lentils and spices. They were smaller than their Indian potato and peas filled counterparts, but adequately crunchy and tasty. The atmosphere in this restaurant is nice enough and the interior looks neat, clean, airy and bright. The women's restroom was modern and clean. The server was friendly and knowledgeable, although a bit rushed as he was tending to about eight tables by himself. This is a good place to go for vegans as well as all their vegetarian dishes do not contain any animal-based ingredients.
We had a group of around 35 international and American people for a wonderful buffet luncheon. The variety and abundance of delicious food, the excellence of the service, the warm and accommodating nature of the host/owner, the ambiance of the restaurant, all lent to an enthusiastic ,"We've got to come back again very soon!" response by our group. I highly recommend going to this fine Ethiopian restaurant.
The only Ethiopian restaurant currently in Pittsburgh. Staff was very nice and friendly. However the food is not as good as what I've had elsewhere. Much greasier and the Injera was allowed to ferment for too long so it had turned bitter.
While Ethiopian cuisine is uncommon for Pittsburgh, the food at Tana isn't really all that good. If you want a different dining experience, try Tana, but if you want a good meal, go somewhere else. Additionally, the atmosphere is always a little cold in the restaurant, like the place has no soul.
However our server was friendly and appropriately attentive on our last visit.
My children took me out for my birthday to one of my favorite eateries. I Love this restaurant. Service and food are top notch. Thanks Tana!
Great Ethiopian food, only place of in Pittsburgh like this that I know of. If you've never been to this type of restaurant, just a heads up, you use your hands to eat the food, so no silverware. Good vegetarian options. Expect to pay a little bit under $15 for an entree and two sides (you chose two vegetarian entrees and they serve you a side portion of them), but it's totally worth it. Super filling and delicious. Serving staff is friendly and attentive and happy to give you recommendations if you ask. Basically, you have no reason not to try this place at least once.
Everything was really good. So flavourful and well-cooked. I haven't had any kind of African food before, so I got the sample platter to try a few things. It was $20 and came with 5 selections of my choice. I shared it with someone and we were both quite full. I admit I didn't expect there to be no silverware, but I wasn't really surprised or offended by it. Everything comes on a large plate with a flat sour dough bread topped with what you ordered. The bread is used to pick up the food. A unique experience.
