My wife and I had a very poor experience with Sundance over Christmas 2015. My wife and I have walked past this store many times and she has commented that she liked many of the items in the store's windows. So a few days before Christmas, I decided to take a chance and buy a couple of sweaters from the store for her. Knowing that this would be an expensive long shot, I asked for a gift receipt and had every expectation that she would exchange my purchases for something else in the store. She did exactly that, and this is where the customer service experience went south.

My wife returned the sweaters with the gift receipt the day after Christmas. She worked with a sales clerk who processed her returned items. As my wife picked out her new items, she gave them to this salesperson, who then gave her an idea of how much credit she had left to spend. As these sweaters were a Christmas gift, my wife had no idea how much she would have to spend without the salesperson's help. She ended up picking 5 items to exchange for the 2 sweaters and at this point, the salesperson handed the process off to another salesperson at the registers. This salesperson stated to my wife that the store's computers were down and that she would not be able to use the gift receipt. She then told my wife that she remembered selling these sweaters to me in the days prior to Christmas and was certain that I did not pay full price for them. Without knowing better, my wife accepted her statement and agreed to a 20% reduction in the value of her returns. My wife ended up leaving with 4 of the 5 items that she picked out and was out of pocket an additional $30 dollars. She relayed this story to me when she returned home. This did not sound right to me so I investigated the situation. Luckily, I still had the original receipt and could verify the store's error.

The store is about 30 minutes from our home so I decided to wait until the Monday after Christmas to return to the store to rectify the situation. I took the original receipt and the new receipt showing the returned items with me. At first, the helpful salesperson at the register did not know how to process the refund. Eventually, a manager came over to ring up another customer’s transaction. She noticed the confusion and asked what the issue was. I explained the situation and asked why someone would arbitrarily reduce the value of a customer’s return. She explained to me that the day that my wife returned the sweaters was “crazy” for them, as their network was down. The salesperson at the register who I was working with asked the manager why someone wouldn’t just look up the original transaction in the customer profile on the internal system in the store. The manager said she didn’t know why. I asked why, if there was a 20% off sale during my first visit to the store, I was charged full price. She again stated that she didn’t know. I then asked if it was the store’s policy to err on the side inconveniencing, and possibly shortchanging, their customers whenever they have an internal problem. The manager said she was sure that it was an innocent mistake and she apologized for my inconvenience. I stated to her that this “innocent mistake” almost cost me $100 dollars and that I was irritated by the situation. It also cost me an hour of driving and 50 miles of gas to take time out of my day to sort this out. She offered nothing but an apology.

In all, the manager acted like this was much ado about nothing and offered me nothing for my time, money and inconvenience. I will not shop in this store again. I would suggest to anyone shopping in this store to check closely the price they are being charged at checkout, as discounts are not clearly advertised and are apparently applied at the discretion of the salespersons. I would also advise against purchasing gifts from this store, as their gift receipts are not worth the paper they are printed on.

Buyers beware when dealing with this store.
