St. Teresa's Academy is the oldest school, women's and Catholic institution in Kansas City. The school was founded and is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet who, since their founding in the 17th century in France, have been at the forefront of preparing young women for the future.
In 1866, at 12th and Washington in Kansas City's Quality Hill area, the Academy rapidly grew in enrollment and prestige. In 1909 the Sisters relocated St. Teresa's to a twenty-acre site at 5600 Main, our current campus. They named the campus "Windmoor" because of the constant wind blowing across the open prairie. On the cornerstone of the first of what would become three elegant campus buildings, the Sisters inscribed the words of St. Teresa of Avila and the motto of the Academy, "Deo Adjuvante Non Timendum" which means "With the help of God, we need not fear."
In 1941 the Sisters added a second building, Donnelly Hall, which housed the city's first and only college for women. In 1962 the college moved to the south part of Kansas City and became Avila College. In 1982 a state-of-the-art gymnasium, the Goppert Center, was completed for the school's competitive women's athletic program.
Already spanning its third century in operation, St. Teresa's has been faithful to the overriding vision and values of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph (CSJs) which make it unique among local, private educational institutions.
Claire, our Senior Prayer Coordinator, and her friends enjoy spending their free periods together in the new Campus Ministry office. #STADAY
Welcome back, STA students! We are so excited to start out the school year with the annual Passing of the Legacy ceremony. The seniors welcomed our new freshmen, the Class of 2022, with a St.Teresa of Avila medal, a prayer card, and a warm hug. We are so glad they have joined us in the sisterhood. #STADAY
Hey STARS, I’m Jasia. I’m a senior here at STA. This school year I’ll be posting on our Facebook page as a part of a social media practicum. I’m super excited to share my life at STA using the hashtag #STADAY.
For the fourth year, St. Teresa’s Academy is so proud to have another class of CSJ Campers prepared to follow in the tradition of great leaderships of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Early this summer, 21 of our rising sophomores (who were chosen by teachers to participate, based on their leadership abilities) attended another successful CSJ Leadership Camp to explore and enhance their leadership skills. The students travel to the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse in St. Louis for... the camp.
The first day is spent working a variety of activities designed to discuss and discover the qualities of leadership they already posess or want to develop. The campers’tour the Motherhouse (led by Sr.Kate Filla. One of the highlights of the trip is a presentation by Sr. Linda Markway discussing the history, mission, and vision of the Sisters of St. Joseph and their impact on St. Teresa’s Academy.
The second day the campers spend the morning problem solving, working in groups and discovering their own leadership styles. Another highlight of the day is their visit to the Nazareth Living Center to play bingo with the residents. In the evening, the students return to the Motherhouse to plan a prayer service which is held after dinner. This year, the leaders were blessed to have many of the Sisters attend the prayer service.
The CSJ Campers returned on the third day, after two days of hard work!
Congrats to our new leaders!
See MoreWell this warms our hearts here at STA. . . three of our 2018 graduates were spotted on campus this evening, wanting to spend some time together in the quad before heading off to their respective colleges. Best wishes, Grace, Logan, and Annie! Your universities are lucky to have you!
For the third time this year, STA had the pleasure of hosting Exeter Math Institute's workshop for math teachers, sharing best practices for math instruction for grade school, junior high and high school students. Dedicated public, charter, and private school teachers from all over the region joined our STA teachers and spent four days with us. It was wonderful hosting this event!
Today was a bittersweet day, as three of our administrative staff retired after sharing their gifts with STA for many years. Please join us in wishing Linda Wilber (Development Associate), Kathleen Barry (Alumnae Director), and Roseann Hudnall (Admissions Director) well! Linda, Kathleen, and Roseann, we cherished our time with you and appreciate all of your efforts to advance the mission of St. Teresa's Academy. We will miss you, but we know exciting adventures await all three of you. God Bless!
We are so thrilled to announce our 2018 St. Teresa's Academy Distinguished Alumna, Dana Cutler Tippin, Class of 1982. Dana is an attorney in Kansas City, and is a leader in her profession, while also serving as a volunteer for numerous professional and community organizations. She believes the excellent faith-based education she received at STA gave her a great foundation to build a successful career, serve others in the community, and raise three sons with her husband and law partner, Keith Cutler, Sr. Alumnae will have the opportunity to hear Dana speak at the STA Reunion on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the Academy. Congratulations, Dana! We look forward to honoring you at this event this fall!
STA incoming senior, Erris Pierson, was recently crowned the National American Miss State Queen of Missouri and will head to Anaheim/Hollywood, California in November to to compete for the national Teen title. Congratulations, Erris! We are so proud of you!
STA Alums, we need your input! Please check your inboxes for an email from STA that would have arrived this past Monday, 6/18/18. Your Class Reps may have also sent you a reminder, as well. If you are an alum and did not receive the email, please contact Paula Holmquist at pholmquist@stteresasacademy.org.
STA is hosting Science Stars this week here on campus. Full STEAM Ahead, youngsters!
Thanks to all of our guests (and sponsors!) who supported Quad Fest 2018 on Friday. We had over 300 guests on campus, socializing, eating, drinking, listening to music, and touring the new Goppert expansion. It was a beautiful night for the STARS! We had 7 alums from the great class of 1983, most of whom have had daughters at STA, are current STA parents, or have daughters on the way. Thanks for helping us continue the legacy! We also loved seeing so many Sisters of St. Josep...h and past parents who brought their adult alums back for the fun. You are always welcome here at the Academy! It was also great to see so many new parents, with incoming freshman. We love all these smiling faces! Last but not least, we're grateful to all of our parent volunteers and students who donned their uniforms once more this year and gave tours of Goppert. You are our best ambassadors, Girls!
See MoreWe'd like to once again thank all of our sponsors for their support of Quad Fest 2018! We'll see you tonight!
