Description

The History of Our School
2016 marked the 110th year of classes in our current school building which towers in Tilden as a beacon of Catholic faith in the Chippewa Valley. Although the building has been here over 110 years, the Catholic school education in Tilden began 37 years earlier in 1869 in the resident pastor's home. In 1873, school opened on March 10 with an enrollment of 48 students. By July 27,1873, enrollment had risen to 114 students. In 1876, a two-room, wood-frame school was built. This building served as a school, sister's dwelling, and a boarding place for students. If 40 or more children congregated on one side of the building, it would tip noticeably.

School continued for decades with the School Sisters of Notre Dame staffing the school. During that time: a new brick school was built (1906), a school milk program was introduced (1956), the school's highest enrollment was 184 (1964), the "Grandparents Day" tradition began (1966-67), and bus transportation was made available for students (1968).
St. Peter School has a rich history based on the traditions of the community. Many of St. Peter's graduates go on to be top in their classes at local high schools. We pray for continued success and dedication of St. Peter's Catholic School for years to come!
