SouthCom is recruiting to establish an eligibility list for the position of 911 Operator / Telecommunicator. This position operates communications equipment that receives and dispatches police, fire and emergency calls via telephone, electronic and radio dispatch equipment.
Essential Duties: Answers and routes telephone calls and messages of emergency and non-emergency nature to the proper public service agency.
Utilizes data input procedure on multiple keyboard terminals to assure data is properly transmitted to the computer.
Maintains records and data in accordance with departmental rules.
Routes, transmits and interprets teletype messages. Testifies at adjudication hearings as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications Required: High School Diploma 21 years old US Citizen
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in high volume 911 center that handles police, fire, and ems. SouthCom will lateral a portion of your cumulative years of service based on previous experience.
Spillman knowledge is also preferred but not required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of, or the ability to learn area geography and an awareness of community events.
Knowledge of and ability to utilize a computer and the required software.
Ability to orally communicate effectively and precisely.
Ability to operate keyboard and telecommunications equipment.
Ability to perform full data entry functions at a rate of approx. 30 wpm.
Ability to obtain information over the telephone from distraught callers.
Ability to maintain emotional stability in stressful situations.
Ability to comprehend and carry out department rules, regulations and procedures.
Ability to maintain security and confidentiality.
Ability to record computer data rapidly and accurately.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
Ability to familiarize oneself with incidents relating to critical law enforcement activities.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to work the required hours of the position.
