The Society of Correctional Physicians (SCP) is a physician's membership organization formed in 1992 by two medical doctors dedicated to the field of correctional health care, Armond Start, MD and Ronald Shansky, MD. Dr. Start, then the medical director of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, recognizing the need to represent and provide a forum for correctional physicians, convened the first meeting on September 25, 1992 with Dr. Shansky's assistance and support.[1] Having first assembled in 1992 with about 30 physician participants, the organization has grown ten-fold since. Educational and business meetings are held twice annually.
