Great place, George is a fantastic bartender.
Looked dark and closed from the outside. Glad I went in. Beautiful OLD bar from 1890's.
Built in the late 1800's, this bar has kept much of the same features from over a hundred years ago with some modernization. Next door to the also historic Calumet Theater, it is a must see for the tiffany glass bar shade and the wall murals.
Copper Country always captivates me.some of if not the oldest geology of Michigan and to experience some of the earliest development in the UP and Shutes brings you back in time along with the rest of the structures that have survived from the Copper boom. Going thru their door is taking a step back in the history of the region. Plus the service and welcoming atmosphere makes you feel like you been a long time patron. The tall dark haired bartender(wish I remembered his name) was very versed on the history of the establishment. The thing that most impressed us most was the fact that we had bought a beer cozy and it fell out of or bag. We called them about an hour later and he said he had found it and knew why we were calling. We received it in our mail 5 days later! The owners are trying to preserve a part of the Copper country history so please if you ever get to Calumet Mi stop in and take in a part of the history of our wonderful UP and sign the guest book and buy a beverage or two. The people that come after you will appreciate the fact you helped it to survive!
A beautiful bar in a historic building with a solid beer and whiskey selection and attentive, knowledgeable staff. A definite go-to any time I'm in Calumet!
