Great authentic German fare. Full menu with a bar including German laugers. Very nice salad bar. Delicious desserts. Interesting decor and truly great wait staff. We had a large group and everyone ordered differently and all enjoyed their choices.
It's a one hour drive from home, but it's worth it. The last time I was there I overheard a lady say something that is to true about this place: "no one EVER leaves here hungry!" They really fill you up! Suggestion: get the chocolate pie with cinnamon ice cream for desert, if you have room let after your main course.
Excellent German food and atmosphere. Highly recommend for family or for a group a friends! Large diving rooms and excellent beer. Good variety of German themed gifts and a very friendly and accommodating staff. Great lunch and dinner options on the menu and also a good bar to kick back and watch your favorite teams at.
The atmosphere is fine. You have to walk through their knick knack store filled with "traditional" not, German things. The goulash was incredibly greasy and tasted burnt. I was so looking forward to it. The soup on the salad bar, cheeseburger potato needed flavor while the tomato herb was outstanding. If only it had been smooth. For a German restaurant, the beer choices were pitiful at best. Thankfully they do allow you to sample but growing up in Germany myself, they were not traditional German beers. The price tag to eat here is also a hefty one. I went in filled with excitement. I left broke and still hungry.
When we get to Jasper, it is a certainty that we eat at the Schnitzelbank. Obviously a German-themed place with German-themed food (and German-themed gift shop). We always find the food to be good and reasonably priced for the quality. The servers we have had have been cordial and efficient. No complaints there. The salad bar is also excellent and includes German fare.
The Schnitzelbank is a southern Indiana institution, serving great German food, and some of the best fried chicken in the area. I've been there several times - food is always excellent - but recently we had a birthday party there, and opted for the family-style meal. What a great way to handle a larger group of people - large plates of meats, vegetables, and potatoes, passed around the table and refilled as often as needed - really simplifies things. No waiting for everyone to go through the menu, decide, and then wait for all the dishes to come out of the kitchen separately. All the food came out at the right temperature, just as tasty as the food off the menu, and waitresses were very attentive, keeping platters filled, and explaining the process to people who'd never had a family-style meal there before. I'd definitely consider this option again.
This is a very nice restaurant that specializes in German food. The staff are friendly and the food is good. We have been here several times over the years when we visit Jasper, IN, and always look forward to going back.
If I lived to be 90, I'd have never elected to go to a German restaurant. But I'll go along with the gang, and the gang wanted to go to Schnitzelbank. Jasper is a very German town, right down to the street names. The outside of the restaurant...well, it looks like it's straight out of the Black Forest. The inside is equally as authentic, right down to the dark, chunky bar and the squeaky wooden chairs. They have a great bottled beer selection, but I'd recommend getting one of their in-house beers. I had the porter and it was excellent. The food was really high quality. I had the bretzel sandwich with German fries. Tasty. Use the hot mustard--it will clear your nostrils, but really adds something. We shared an Apple strudel. I'd swear that was homemade ice cream they topped it with. By the time my meal was over, I was even game to walk around the gift shop and have my picture taken in the photo shoot area outside. They completely won me over with good food and exceptional service. A very enjoyable place and completely unexpected. Highly recommend.
One of two restaurants in southern Indiana I will drive over an hour to eat at. Wow, their fried chicken, schnitzel and salad bar are heavenly. I haven't had a bad thing on the menu and always look forward to an opportunity to eat there. They are always busy, and for good reason. Plan ahead and enjoy the ambiance.
I want to be able to buy a 5 gallon bucket of there hot potato salad! The food is just dam good.
Holiday-style visit with 2granddaughters!! They had never been, they loved the fried chicken & sides. Great service, wonderful experience!!! ;)
My favorite German restaurant. This place has delicious food and wonderful service. We arrived 20 minutes before closing with a party of 8 and were treated spectacularly. Our drink cups were never empty and the wait staff was friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this restaurant for it's good and atmosphere.
My wife had chicken livers with fried potatoes plus German noodles! Her comment was the chicken livers are the best she's ever had! Coming from her that's saying a lot! I had three kinds of German sausage on a bed of sauerkraut with fried potatoes and a salad and it was absolutely out of this world! You must include this restaurant on your bucket list!
I have only recently discovered this establishment within the past couple years, and I am thankful for friends that suggested this place to.
I have loved everything on the menu to date, I mean not one disappointment, and that's rare for me! Though my favorite thing on their menu sadly isn't even from the German section. The livers and gizzards are just as great as if your grandmother were there with her deep cast iron pan. Everything is always so fresh, and then you have to adore the lovely waitresses who keep their charm even late into the night when I come in. When I come through town on business it's usually within an hour of close and the ladies and manager are always just as happy as can be to be of service. This restaurant is a must, and so is a Warsteiner with your meal!
Susie is the best!
