Campsites not as advertised. Barely big enough for the trailer be brought. "Volunteers" are not knowledgeable in campsites and reservations.

I love this campground. It is much smaller and more isolated than the nearby San Clemente State Park or San Onofre. A very quiet campground, not full of the yahoos the other two can occasionally attract. There is a bit of a walk to the beach. We always bring bikes, and it is an easy ride.

We have reserved many different spots at the San Mateo campground throughout the past 5 years or so, starting around 2012. Anyway it's been our go to location for Father's Day weekend. For the most part I have pretty good things to say about the campground, showers are nice the restrooms are usually stocked with paper and are clean enough, The only major problem I had last year was the Rangers! We reserved two sites on the West End of the campground. It must've been around 9 PM or so that the Rangers came to our campsite telling us to keep it down/turn down the music or will be kicked out! They got really close to us and made us feel like we were doing something horrible! Like criminals or something! We were shocked! We only had 1 cell phone playing music and we were sitting by the fire having a good time like you would expect to do at a campground. Wow! Really! We felt really violated and angry! In the years past I had a radio that was much louder than the cell phone and I love to play Carlos Santana. Other people in the campground as soon as I turned the music down would shout at me , telling me to turn the music back up!. Anyway if you are reading this I hope you don't have that same problem. That experience was a total bummer about our trip last year, and I had to apologize to my family that I invited and had spoke to so highly about our previous years experience at San Mateo campground. We spoke with our neighbors at the campsites and told them the story and everyone was like shocked and they didn't have any complaints/or say that we were being loud. Go figure I don't know but in any case will be there this year for Father's Day and I hope the rangers don't come raining down on my special camping trip with my kids!

We like to bring our family and friends to San Mateo. It is close, clean, and we are able to make a trip to the beach or into San Clemente quick and easy. Hiking trails/ bike trails, clean restrooms/ showers. The RV camp spots are quite large. And the surroundings are beautiful.

Pretty decent campground. Pay showers. Great location. Busy and crowded at times. A little on the loud side. Some of the sites are too close to the other sites. Sometimes kinda 'grapes of wrath' with transient people who are definitely not campers, but homeless. Lock up your stuff. There is a Von's not too far. Pre-book, as I am sure it fills up in the summer.

Compared to other CA State parks, the camp ground is not properly maintained and has alot of trash that is not being picked up by park staff. Also the vegetation is being destroyed by campers and the homeless that seems to have taken residence in the park. Beware the showers lie and there's tweekers everywhere.

Limited or no cell service, no Wi-Fi. Grounds were great though. Restrooms and camp sites were clean. Beware the ants. 2 mile hike to beach

The site of our annual week long trip. I love it, it hold so many memories. Awesome place to go camping but the amenities have gotten under maintained and the campground host are useless as they don't take care of the grounds and the people as they should. Still love this place.

Very nice campground, not really in demand so reservations are at least competitive. The ground is mostly dirt for the tens campers but the bathrooms are clean and the kiddos have tuns of fun.

Clean and quiet with roomy sites. Good security. Showers are nice but cost 50 cents for 2 minutes. The 1.5 mile trail to San Onofre beach is a good hike with lots to see because it's the pathway surfers use to get to the beach, which is stunning. It is also just a mile to get into the south end of San Clemente on El Camino Real.
