Description

The mission of the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) is to conduct military Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs in San Antonio that comply all Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements, are of the highest quality, and meet the needs of the Department of Defense (DoD). SAUCHEC graduates are physician specialists who are qualified, competent and morally and ethically suited for careers in medicine and to serve in the Medical Corps of the uniformed services of the Unites States. They will provide medical care to DoD beneficiaries and will meet the highest standards of professional competence and efficiency.

By combining the resources of its member institutions (Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) and Wilford Hall Medical Center (WHMC)) into a fully integrated GME entity, SAUSHEC will provide a scholarly environment dedicated to excellence in education and health care with the most efficient and cost-effective use of DoD physical, financial and human resources. SAUSHEC is further committed to collaborating with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and the Audie Murphy Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital to improve GME quality and efficiency in San Antonio.

SAUSHEC will accomplish its mission by serving as the ACGME-recognized Sponsoring Institution for all military GME programs in San Antonio. The SAUSHEC Dean will serve as the ACGME Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for all military GME programs in San Antonio.

SAUSHEC's member institutions will ensure that SAUSHEC has sufficient resources to ensure its programs meet curricular, scholarly and other ACGME standards for GME institutions and programs. Member institutions will maintain accreditation by The Joint Commission (TJC) as further evidence of their commitment to quality patient care and GME. SAUSHEC's Dean will have direct access to the member institutions Commanders and Administrators on matters relating to facility needs and resources for GME programs. The Dean shall be is empowered by the Commanders of BAMC & WHMC with responsibility and authority to run all military GME programs in San Antonio. SAUSHEC, its member institutions and its programs will comply with all ACGME Institutional and Program Requirements for accredited residencies and with pertinent Air Force, Army and DoD Directives and Instructions related to the conduct of GME.

The education mission of SAUSHEC and its member institutions will not be compromised by excessive reliance upon residents to fulfill service requirements.

One overarching principle of SAUSHEC is that all residents will have the same educational and professional (medical) requirements and opportunities and will be subject to the same standards, evaluation systems and due process policy irrespective of their branch of uniformed service. However, for military administrative/command and control purposes, each resident will be assigned to the member institution of the resident's military branch of service. SAUSHEC accepts that slight differences in administrative requirements exist between the Air Force and Army (uniforms, Physical Training (PT) test and other service-specific training requirements).
